  1. Unit 1- Intro to Health EQ: What are the three components of health? Describe each of the six components of health. State four influences on wellness. How can one improve two components of health?

  2. Three Components of Health In order for a person to be healthy, they must balance the following components. • Physical Health • Mental Health • Social Health

  3. Physical Health • Involves your body and how you keep it strong. * Eating a balanced diet * Exercising regularly * Getting enough rest ( 8-10 hrs for ages 14-17, 7-9 hrs for ages 18-64) * Avoiding risky behaviors

  4. Mental Health • Relates to your feelings and emotions about yourself and others. • Appropriately expresses emotions • Works to achieve goals • Accepts responsibility for their actions • Seeks help when needed

  5. Social Health • Involves the way you get along with others. • Respecting others • Supporting family and friends • Not putting others down/ bullying • Being a dependable and loyal friend

  6. Health Triangle • Balancing all of the components of health is known as the Health Triangle.

  7. What is Wellness? • An overall state of well-being, total health. • Achieving wellness can be done by making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on an understanding of health knowledge and good attitudes. • This is an ongoing, lifelong commitment to physical, mental, and social health.

  8. Health Continuum • Our health is always changing. • Used to show that your health is on a sliding scale with many degrees of health and wellness in between.

  9. Promoting Your Health • Lifestyle factors- personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives, that help determine his or her level of health. • 7 Key Factors 1. Getting enough rest 2. Eating a balanced diet 3. Refraining from smoking and using tobacco products. 4. Eat breakfast daily. 5. 20-30 min of vigorous activity 3 times or more a week. 6. Do not use alcohol or other drugs. 7. Maintain your recommended weight • Your Attitude, Your Health- Having a good attitude affects how you take care of yourself. • Prevention- practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free from disease and other ailments. • Applying sunscreen • Wearing a seat belt • Wearing protective gear when riding bike or playing sports • Be an advocate- to speak or act in support of something • Volunteer at a clinic • Promote health issues at school • Train for a profession in the medical field • Take meals to the elderly

Why is health education Important? • To learn to become and stay healthy. • Health education- providing of accurate health information in such a way as to influence people to change attitudes so they take positive action about their health. • Goal is to help people live long, productive lives. • Health literacy- an individual’s capacity to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and use such information and services in ways that promote his/ her health and wellness. • To be health literate one must: 1. Be a critical thinker and problem solver 2. Be a responsible and productive citizen 3. Be a self-directed learner 4. Be an effective communicator

  12. What influences your Health? Internal Factors External Factors Outside of you those inside you

  13. What Influences your Health cont. • Heredity- Traits passed from parent to child • Eye and hair color • Shape of your eyes and nose • Body type • Inherited diseases ( heart disease, diabetes, etc.)

What Influences your Health cont. • Environment- total of your surroundings-your family, where you grew up, where you live now, and all of your experiences. • Physical Environment- Physical conditions in which you live • 1. parks, jogging paths, recreational facilities • 2. safe streets • 3. air quality- pollution • 4. medical care • Social Environment- your interaction with others that includes family, friends, and others you come into daily contact with.

  15. What Influences your Health cont. • Culture- collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. • 1. Ethnic group- Caucasian, African American, Native American, etc. • 2. Community • 3. Nation

  16. What Influences your Health cont. • Media- Influences what you buy, what you watch on television, and even how you think.

  17. What Influences your Health cont. • Behavior- the way you choose to act within your environment and with your inherited abilities.

  18. Four ways Society Addresses Health Problems 1. Medical Advances 2. Technology 3. Public Policy 4. Education

  19. Unit 1- Intro to Health Day 3- Risky Behavior and your Health EQ: List the six health risk behaviors that lead to health problems in teens. Distinguish between controllable and uncontrollable risk factors. Name three behaviors you can adopt now to improve your health.

  20. Risk Factors and Teens Risk factors- actions or behaviors that represent a potential health threat. Controllable Risk Factors Uncontrollable Risk Factors Those that you cannot control Heredity Age Race Those you can control • Physical Acitvity • Diet

  21. Health Risk Behaviors • Sedentary Lifestyle • Alcohol and other drug use • Sexual Activity • Behaviors that cause injury • Tobacco Use • Poor eating habits

  22. Cumulative Risks • Risks that increase gradually with each added risk • Not wearing a seat belt, and speeding. • Texting and driving • Playing sports when it’s storming outside.

  23. Actions lead to Consequences • Action- what you do • Consequence- what happens afterward • There are 6 types of consequences: • Physical- hurting yourself • Emotional- feeling upset • Academic- failing a class • Financial- losing money • Legal- getting arrested • Social- fighting with friends
