  2. AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE FOR THE BLIND (APH) This tutorial is being provided by the Clearinghouse for Specialized Media and Translations (CSMT). We will present information about the APH instructional materials and devices available to students in California.

  3. OUR MISSION The mission of the CSMT is to make learning resources and learning environments accessible and meaningful to students with disabilities.

  4. CSMT and APH? CSMT is responsible for the Federal Quota funds distributed by the US government to the legally blind in California. We record and verify all census records, distribute the funds, and account for money spent on APH products.

  5. ACT TO PROMOTE THE EDUCATION OF THE BLIND In 1879 Congress passed the Act to Promote Education for the Blind. APH was designated the organization to develop, produce, and distribute educational materials for blind students.

  6. APH FUNDING Each year Congress allocates an amount given to APH. States are required to conduct an annual census to determine the number of qualified legally blind students. This number is divided by the amount allocated, and that money is sent to the states.

  7. EX-OFFICIO TRUSTEE Each account for APH has a trustee overseeing the funding allocations. These trustees also serve on the APH board to make recommendations and to advise APH of the needs of blind students.

  8. CALIFORNIA TRUSTEES • California Department of Education (CDE) • Jonn Paris-Salb • Public and Private Schools • California School for the Blind • Stuart Wittenstein • Braille Institute • Nancy Neibrugge • Orientation for the Blind • Anthony Candela

  9. CALIFORNIA TOTALS California adds the total of the California School for the Blind, Braille Institute, and Orientation for the Blind to the numbers of students in the CDE census. The total enrollment for California in 2009 was 6,142.

  10. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE APH? APH offers many products in their catalog. The range of materials includes books in Braille and large print, to manipulatives and devices. There is a product catalog available on the APH Accessible Catalogue Download Center Web page at http://www.aph.org/catalogs/index.html#Products (Outside Source)

  11. LOUIS DATABASE The Louis Database lists all books available in braille and large print. There are over 180,000 titles listed from agencies across the country. To search for a book, please go to the APH File Repository Information Web page at http://www.aph.org/louis/reposinf.htm (Outside Source).

  12. APH RESOURCES In addition to APH books, the following is available on their Web site • Tactile Image Library • Electronic downloads (brl and rtf) • Medical information and research articles of eye conditions • Recording studios

  13. TACTILE GRAPHICS LIBRARY The Tactile Graphics Library is an electronic storage of hundreds of graphics for math, science, maps, and other shapes that can be downloaded. All of these graphics were contributed by transcribers to save time by sharing resources.

  14. ELECTRONIC DOWNLOADS When a book is transcribed by any transcriber the braille files are sent to APH. A teacher needing a file from the APH repository may request a file to be added to IMODS. CSMT obtains the file and makes it available for download. Send requests by e-mail to csmt@cde.ca.gov.

  15. MEDICAL RESEARCH • Medical articles and other research articles pertaining to the blind can also be found on the APH Web site at http://www.aph.org (Outside Source). • Trends in treatment and diagnosis are provided for educators and those in the medical and educational fields.

  16. RECORDING STUDIOS APH has several recording studios on site to provide readings of books, articles, and other literature of interest to the blind population. These recordings can be downloaded by individuals or agencies.
