Predicting population size • If the population size of a group is unknown, the sample sizes can be used to make predictions and calculate this number. • For example: • A forest has too many deer for us to count. We take a group of 100 deer and mark them then distribute them evenly throughout the population. Several days pass, then we take a sample of 120 deer and find that 20 of them are marked. We can set up a proportion to calculate the total population size. • i.e.=. 20x = 100(120) / 20 So, our estimate is there are 600 deer in our population.
