What is Skype? • Skype is a free internet communication tool • It can be used to:- - make phone calls at cheaper rates or for free - make video calls - send text messages - share files - share screens
Why should I use Skype? Skype enables you to see students who may have difficulty accessing standard support. E.g. those on placement, with medical conditions, those with communication difficulties i.e. ASD, with temporary disabilities, students living away from the local area, with childcare responsibilities, with anxiety, in hospital ...
Why should I use Skype? • Can also be used when YOU have problems reaching a student • Can save you time travelling • Easy to use for ‘last minute’ meetings • Can be an alternative when rooms are unavailable • Useful if you just need to have a brief meeting • More interactive than email or phone call
Who can use Skype? • Any student who has internet access. This may be through:-
How can I use it for learning support or mentoring? • Students do not need to be familiar with Skype – it can be taught in the first 5 minutes of a session! • Information can be shared using:- • Verbal communication • Live video • File sharing • Instant messaging
Get me started • Need to download Skype and note your Skype name http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/ • Give Skype name e.g. catherine.watts1 to student or get theirs • Ask student to either accept your contact request or send a contact request to you • After a session, email the MSR for an electronic signature
