  3. The Need for a Broadband Map • Since 2000 the FCC has been gathering data. • US ranking 15th in BB adoption is not reflective of our standing in the world or industry. • Problems are fixable, but need data and perspective to formulate reasonable plans and investments. • BDIA and SBDD

  4. Stimulus Funding Leads to Action • 50 States, DC, and 4 Territories awarded Funds for national Mapping and Planning effort. • Gov. O’Malley designates Maryland Broadband. • Best GIS talent in the State form MBBMI • Salisbury University • Towson University • State GIO/DoIT • Department of Business & Economic Development

  5. MBBMI Project Goals • Meet/Exceed Federal Goals for BB Inventory • Map and Verify Service Coverage Areas • Provide Consumers Reliable Information • Promote the Marketplace • Accelerate Expansion and Adoption of BB. • Questions

Data Development Goals • Identify and Map: • Availability of broadband service • Defined as: • > 768 kbps downstream, > 200 kbps upstream • Ability to provide w/in 7 – 10 working days • Technologies used to provide service • Speeds at which broadband is available • Wireless service areas and spectrums used
