  2. The Arabs • Arabian Peninsula • Desert land that lacked rivers and lakes • Nomadic People because they were constantly looking for food and water • Sheikh • Leader of the tribe • Farmers and Sheepherders • Domesticated the camel • Towns began to develop

  3. The Arabs • Early Arabs were polytheistic • Recognized a supreme god named Allah • Traced their ancestors to Abraham who they believed built a house of worship at Mecca

  4. The Life of Muhammad • Muhammad • Orphaned at age 5 he grew up to become a caravan manager • Married a rich widow named Khadija • Went to hills to meditate • Believed he was visited by Gabriel and the final revelations of Allah were given to him • Quran – these revelations were written down • Contains ethical guidelines and laws which followers of Allah are supposed to live by

The Life of Muhammad • Muhammad • Returned home and told his wife the message • Once his wife converted to Islam he began spreading the message • Spread the message for three years with only three followers • Since no one would listen he left Mecca and moved to Madinah (Medina) • This journey to Medinah was called the Hijrah

The Life of Muhammad • Muhammad • Became a religious and political leader • Put together a military force and they returned to Mecca • The City of Mecca surrendered to Muhammad and converted to Islam • Hajj • Pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims are encouraged to take at least once in their lifetime

  7. The Teachings of Muhammad • Islam is monotheistic • Islam emphasizes salvation and offers the hope of an afterlife • Muhammad is considered a prophet but he was a man • Islam is a direct and simple faith that stresses the need to obey Allah

The Teachings of Muhammad • Five Pillars of Islam • Belief • Prayer • Charity • Fasting • Pilgrimage • Shari’ah • Provides believers with a set of practical laws to regulate their daily lives • Regulates all parts of Muslim life • Does not separate religious matters from civil or political law

  9. The Teachings of Muhammad • Muslim Believers • Follow sound principles and behavior • Practice honesty and justice • Not allowed to do the following: • Gamble • Eat Pork • Drink alcohol • Engage in dishonest behavior
