SERIETEKET The Swedish comics library, the only institution of its kind in Sweden
Serieteket Year One • Founded in November 1996 by Kristiina Kolehmainen and Elisabet Andersson • First located on a small side street on Stockholm’s Southern island • Part of the Stockholm Public Library System
Inspirations • Centre National de La Bande Dessinée et de l’Image in Angoulême, France • Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels, Belgium • The collection at the Municipal Library of Lausanne, Schweiz
In the Beginning • Serieteket launched a new way of organizing its collections by genre instead of the Swedish classification system. • Serieteket participated in a youth employment programme. • 17 youths in 3 years
Phase Two • In October 1999 Serieteket moves to Kulturhuset in central Stockholm. • Greatly improved location. • Better exhibition spaces. • We start working with ”Fanzine Heaven” that later became ”Small Press Expo”.
Hard Facts • Collection of about 12 000 albums • The largest selection in Sweden of books about comics, their history and cartoon art • 25 magazine subscriptions + Historical archive • Comics in 15 different languages • Approximately 100 000 visitors and 40 000 loans per annum
Working at Serieteket • Target audience: People who like comics age 16 and up • Staff of 4 serving a cast of thousands per annum • During any given day we might: - Advice on what to read - Give info - Loans/returns - Keep up with current events in the comic world - Work with social media
Selection Process • 70 % Alternative comix • 30 % Mainstream comics • ”Clover Model”: - Europe - North America - Asia
