  1. Distracted driving is defined as any activity that may take you away from the task of driving. These include: • Texting • Talking on the Phone • Eating/Drinking • Grooming • Using Your GPS • Talking with Passengers

  2. In 2012, 171.3 billion text messages were sent every month in the U.S. Over 73% of cell phone users send and receive texts. This up from over 50% since 2009!

  3. 90% of Americans own cell phones. 2 This number has held steady since 2010. Over 660,000 American drivers are using their cell phones or other electronic devices while they drive.

  4. 3 25% of teenagers respond to 1 or more texts every time they drive. 90% of teens expect a reply to a text within 5 minutes! 10% of parents admit they have texted their teens while they drive.

  5. Distracted driving increases the chance of getting into an accident by 3x’s! 16.6% of women were putting on makeup when they caused an accident. 18.3% of men report road rage…

  6. 6 10% of fatal car accidents involving drivers under 20 were the result of distracted driving. 77% of young adults believe they can safely text while they drive. 7 27% of distracted drivers in fatal car accidents were in their 20’s.

  7. 8 Every day, over 1,060 people are in car accidents caused by distracted drivers. 9 In 2012, 421,000 people were injured in a car accident as a result of a districted driver. This is a 9% increase from 2011.

  8. 10 In states where distracted driving is illegal, the average fine is anywhere from $20 to $10,000 for 1st time offenders. Some drivers lose their license or have insurance premiums increased. Often times, the only way to get it off your record is to take a defensive driving or traffic school course.
