  1. ENGL 2307 10 March 2014

  2. Update on the plan for the week • My hope still is to finish the drafts by Thursday, but no guarantees. • I will post the readings for the week after spring break on the blog this week. Don’t forget them.

  3. Jennifer Crusie • Presentation by Kaylie Robbins

  4. Other information about Crusie • She is awesome (I met her; I know.) • Her dissertation is on romances (so she is a writer and an expert). • She taught a variety of levels of English and continues to teach Master Classes in fiction writing. • OHIO—many of her novels feature real places, such as the Max and Erma’s in German Village, Columbus, OH

  5. Historical Context • Presentation by Colleen Hardy

  6. 1992 • Bill Clinton elected president. • Peacekeeping in Somalia • Hurricane Andrew • Civil War in Afghanistan • LA/Rodney King Riots • Energy Star begins • 5 a Day program begins • Jeffrey Dahmer sent to prison

  7. A view of 1992

  8. Adaptation • Where do we see differences between The Turn of the Screw and Maybe This Time? • What is the significance of the differences?

  9. Setting--time • Published in 2010 • Takes place in 1992. “Because.” • Why do you think that is true? • What is the significance?

  10. Adaptation • Where do we see similarities between the text? • What is the significance of these similarities?

  11. Setting—the house • Tower, battlements, moat • “Theodore’s great-great-grandfather had the house brought over from England in the 1850s. I don’t know why he dug a moat” (Crusie 7). • Description pages 26-29 • How does this fit with the description from The Turn of the Screw? What is the significance?

  12. The House—Turn of the Screw style “Driving at that hour, on a lovely day, through a country the summer sweetness of which served as a friendly welcome, my fortitude revived and, as we turned into the avenue, took a flight that was probably but a proof of the point to which it had sunk. I suppose I had expected, or had dreaded, something so dreary that what greeted me was a good surprise. I remember as a thoroughly pleasant impression the broad clear front, its open windows and fresh curtains and the pair of maids looking out; I remember the lawn and the bright flowers and the crunch of my wheels on the gravel and the clustered tree-tops over which the rooks circled and cawed in the golden sky” (James 7).

  13. Characterization The Turn of the Screw Maybe This Time Andromeda North Archer Mrs. Crumb Alice Carter Mary Jessel Peter Quint • The Governess • The Master • Mrs. Grose • Flora • Miles • Miss Jessel • Peter Quint

  14. Thursday • Focus on Maybe This Time as a text on its own • Think about the haunter, haunted, haunting, and the laying of the ghost • What does the addition of clear romance do? • How do we deal with the extra ghosts? • If all goes as planned---midterm grades
