  1. Chapter 12-3 Using slopes and intercepts

  2. Key Terms to Know: Intercepts • X-intercept: the value where the line crosses the x-axis (where y= 0) • Y-intercept: the value where the line crosses the y-axis (where x= 0)

  3. Key Terms to Know: Forms of a Line • Standard Form: Ax+ By = C, where A, B and C are real numbers • Slope-Intercept Form: y = mx + b, where m is slope and b is the y-intercept

  4. Finding the x-intercepts and y-intercepts to graph the line 3x + 4y = 12 • To find the x- intercept (where y= 0) Plug in 0 for y, and solve for x • To find the y-intercept (where x = 0) Plug in 0 for x, and solve for y

  5. Finding the x-intercepts and y-intercepts to graph the line -5x + 2y = 10 • To find the x- intercept (where y= 0) Plug in 0 for y, and solve for x • To find the y-intercept (where x = 0) Plug in 0 for x, and solve for y

  6. Writing an equation in slope-intercept form y = x – 6 • Rewrite the equation to show each part. • Slope (m) = • Y-Intercept (b) =

  7. Writing an equation in slope-intercept form 3x + 7y = 9 • Rewrite the equation to show each part. • Slope (m) = • Y-Intercept (b) =

  8. Write the equation that passes through (-3, 1) and (2, -1) in slope-intercept form • What two pieces do we need for slope-intercept form? • Find Slope (m) = • Find Y-Intercept (b)=

  9. Write the equation that passes through (0, 3) and (2, -5) in slope-intercept form • What two pieces do we need for slope-intercept form? • Find Slope (m) = • Find Y-Intercept (b)=
