Friday, 8/24 • Warm-Up: • Find your assigned seat • Write the HW in your planner • Learning Goal(s): Identify the areas of study in Earth Science and the systems that make up the Earth. • Agenda: • Collect Student Information Forms • Distribute the Unit 1 Planner and Vocabulary • Class discussion of the areas of Earth Science and Systems of the Earth. • Distribute textbooks while students work on vocabulary and WS #1 • HW: Section 1.1 Vocabulary and WS #1 due on Monday, 8/27 • Remember - All students must have a binder by Tuesday, 8/28 • Signed Syllabus Forms due Tuesday, 8/28 • Books must be covered by Tuesday, 8/28

  4. Astronomy • Study of objects beyond the Earth’s atmosphere

  5. Geology • Study of the materials that make up Earth and the processes that form and change these materials

  6. Oceanography • Study of Earth’s oceans

  7. Meterology • Study of weather-producing forces in the atmosphere

  8. Environmental Science • Study of the interactions of Earth organisms and their surroundings

Monday, 8/27 • Warm-Up: • Grab a Warm-Up Sheet from your table • Write down a topic that is studied in Earth Science • Write the HW in your planner • Learning Goal(s): Identify the areas of study in Earth Science and the systems that make up the Earth. • Agenda: • Collect any syllabus forms, check vocabulary and WS #1 for completion • Finish class discussion of the areas of Earth Science and Systems of the Earth • Check/correct WS #1 • Fill out the Table of Contents for Unit 1 • Time to work on vocabulary for Section 1.2 • HW: Study vocabulary and notes for tomorrow’s Section 1.1 Quiz • Section 1.2 vocabulary due on Thursday, 8/30 • Remember – Syllabus forms, book covers, and binders due tomorrow!

  10. The Earth’s Systems • There are 4 main Earth systems that all interact with one another.

  11. Geosphere • Area from the surface of the Earth down to its center. • Made up of four parts: • Crust – outer shell • Mantle – in between • Core - innermost layer

  12. Atmosphere • Gases that surround the Earth • 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Other (Water Vapor, Argon, Carbon Dioxide, Trace Gases) • Provides us with oxygen, protects us from radiation, keeps temperatures suitable

  13. Hydrosphere • All of the water on Earth and in the atmosphere • 97% salt water, 3% freshwater (most in glaciers)

  14. Biosphere • All organisms on Earth and the environments in which they live • All systems depend and interact with one another!
