  4. Tel•One Internet and Data function • Operate internet backbone for Zimbabwe • Most ISPs connect thru Telone • Only a few operate their own international Gateway as additional capacity

  5. Tel•One Internet and Data function • Mandated by the Regulator to administer the ccTLD for Zimbabwe • Steps to make Telone the sole administrator of all Domain name services for Zimbabwe being undertaken

  6. DNS Administration in Zimbabwe • Telone responsible for • ‘.zw’ the ccTLD • ‘.org.zw’ • All DNS expected to come under one Operator’s administration soon

Domain Registration Process • Directly applying Customers use Co. letterhead • Customer assisted in completing a Domain Template • ISPs send a completed template through soft copy • Registration involves manual editing of zone files • Once registered the customer is billed • Others register through ZISPA

Telone DNS Technology levels • Two Solaris 5.7 based servers used • Ns1.telone.co.zw • Ns2.telone.co.zw • No special databases except the zone files themselves • No whois service available in Zimbabwe • Simple lookup commands used to query zone information • BIND 8.1.2 used for the DNS service • Manual update /entry of zone done at primary server • Distribution to secondary set at 3 hrs
