  4. 2013 entry - Medicine • Successful medical students from QE • had an average of : GCSE - 10.6 A+A*, • AS - 271 UCAS points ( AAAAC is 280), • A2 - 433 points (A*A*A* is 420) • All achieved an A grade in AS biology and chemistry • Successful students achieved in all areas ie GCSE + AS + A + relevant experience + good Ukcat/Bmat score • The minimum entry achieved at A2 was AAA • Few medical schools accept a grade C in GCSE English or maths

  5. 2013 entry • Medicine 40 students applied - 12 offers – 13 starters • Dentistry 20 applied - 7 offers – 9 starters • Pharmacy 70 applied - 45 offers – 41 starters • Foundation Medicine at Nottingham received > 40 applications for each place. • The lowest offer for Medicine and Dentistry is AAA • Pharmacy offers mainly AAB with some ABB and a couple BBB

  6. 2013 entry Other related courses • Midwifery 7 students applied - 0 offers – 0 starters • Nursing 15 applied - 5 offers – 4 starters • Optometry 15 applied - 14 offers – 12 starters

  7. 2012 entry • The unusual situation of more starting medicine and dentisty than offers is because the students were originally rejected by  the university but then offered a place post results. • No student received an offer/place for children’s nursing  or midwifery. • The  number starting optometry includes 2 students rejected for dentistry and 1 for medicine. • The number starting pharmacy includes 2 students rejected for dentistry and 3 for medicine. • The rejected dentist and medicine students obtained their  places via Extra/clearing  as those who put optometry or pharmacy as 5th choice on UCAS application received rejections ( except one)

  8. National Picture • UCAS report in 2012 the ratio of • applications to each acceptance was • 11 to 1. The number applying • for medicine for 2013 was at a similar • level to 2012 . • In their 2014 prospectus, Leicester quote 2463 applications for 162 places - higher than the average.

  10. Helping themselves • Evidence of experience AND impact • The BEST results- EVERY module in ALL subjects • Adopting advice re applications

  11. Issues to consider • Parental pressure/expectation • Mismatch - aspiration v performance • External drivers – HE Funding and admissions policies

  12. Some options • Another health related career • A similar but less competitive HE course eg Pharmaceutical Science/Biomed Science/Dental hygiene

  13. The way forward • Careful research • Careful discussion • Careful planning • Open mind to alternatives • A realistic application • ………….Offers!
