  3. Context INDEX India is growing at a fast pace. But this growth is increasing the chasm between the poor and the rich. Inclusive growth is still to happen. The poor are still constitute more than 75% (if we take $2 a day expenditure norm). India is trying to reach out to them in a variety of ways – Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee, National Rural Livelihoods Mission, National Rural Health Mission, Right to Education, Food Security Act, Social Security for All … There are also Civil Society Initiatives. Yet the efforts are not enough.

  4. Context INDEX Many of us have been blessed with the benefaction of the society and the state and today, we are not poor. We have choices. We are able to cope with the risks in our lives and livelihoods. We understand that Education has made a huge difference to us in we becoming what we are today. We know that some of us could not catch the bus (of Education). Some could catch a bus that did not take them ahead really. We also understand that Livelihoods people lead have some surmountable gaps and some opportunities they can tap. They need a little push. A little organization. A little window.

  5. Context INDEX We can make a difference to their lives. We can make a difference to the lives of their children with decent education window. We can pay back. We can payback to the society.

  6. Context: Education INDEX • Huge dropouts from schools up to Class X - 64%; it is the third highest in the country. • 3R – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - skills are weak across. • English and Mathematics are the two subjects where large numbers flunk. • Language Skills in general and English in particular are low. • Most surveys confirm that employability is less than 10% in ‘educated’. • Life Skills and Skills for employment are low.

  7. Context: Livelihoods INDEX • Many traditional/age-old professions are shrinking and are not able to offer decent income; many of them are leaving these occupations. These include agriculture, weaving etc. • Many livelihoods are not remunerative. The wage realized is far lower than the minimum wage and the number days of employment is not even half. • Most producers and service providers realize a meager 20 paise from the consumer rupee • There are gaps in value-chains that can be plugged; and opportunities that can be tapped with proper leads/support • There is also scope and need for new livelihood opportunities reaching the poor

  8. What is Bharatiyam? • Bharatiyam is a Foundation, a registered Trust initiated in February 2010, set out to facilitate payback to the society to reduce poverty and make a difference in the lives of the poor. • Bharatiyam is - a way of caring; a way to make the planet free from poverty; a means to payback to society; an expression of live and let others live. • Its approach is “Help People Help Themselves” • Initially, Bharatiyam’s support focus is in Education and Livelihoods – Decent Education to the poor children; and improved livelihoods portfolio to the poor families INDEX

  9. Bharatiyam: Mission and Vision • Bharatiyam’s Mission is to build and nurture a movement – people for planet and planet for people – of paying back to society and helping people to help themselves - towards a Planet, beginning with India, where all children have access to decent education, all households have decent portfolios of livelihoods and people have choices to make. • Towards this, Bharatiyam seeks to empathize, enlighten, engage, educate and empower ‘young’ through its flagship Bharatiyam Program in Education and Livelihoods domains. • Bharatiyam’s Vision 2025 is to reach out to 100,000 children and their families. INDEX

  10. Bharatiyam’s UNDERSTANDING • Bharatiyam understands that education is primary way of breaking out of chains of poverty. Education up to 15 years is a right to every individual. It should give an individual fish, fishing and meta-fishing. • Bbaratiyam believes – an individual needs fish first to survive, fishing skill to live on fishing and meta-fishing (beyond fishing) skill to identify the gaps and opportunities, acquire the required skills, tools and resources and tap them for better living • Harnessing one’s innate potential along with life skills and vocational skills based on counseling and competence is way forward for children/youth. • Bharatiyam also realizes: Education  Employment and Entrepreneurship  Decent Livelihoods INDEX

  11. Bharatiyam’s UNDERSTANDING • Simultaneously, Bharatiyam has to work with the poor families for improving their livelihoods portfolio. • Existing livelihoods need to be strengthened with plugging knowledge, skill, tool and resource gaps. • Collectivization needs to be facilitated so as to increase revenue/income, decrease cost/expenditure, increase work/employment and decrease risks. • Expansion and diversification in livelihoods is on the foundation of improved existing livelihoods base. • The propensity of individuals vis-à-vis Job-employment, Wage-employment, Piece-rate based employment and Self-employment differs from individual to individual. The support, therefore, has to be carefully tailored on a case-by-case basis. INDEX

  14. Bharatiyam Vidya • The literacy rate (67.7%) in Andhra Pradesh ranks 31 in the country. If we take basic 3R literacy – Read, Write and Arithmetic, the situation will be far worse. • As per 2001 Census, the dropout (funneledout) upto Class X is 64%. This is higher for girls. • Education is definitely the surest and best way to reduce poverty. • Every child has the right to have minimum education of 15 years (10+2+3) for acquiring life skills. • Most government schools are not able to meet minimum standards. • In this context, most of the students dropping out of schooling gradually and many of the bright rural students who have the potential to compete with the best in the state/country are not able to do so. INDEX

  15. Bharatiyam Vidya • In response to this context, Bharatiyam is intervening in following ways: • Developing, piloting and spreading improved models of education • Identifying, adopting and running schools with a difference and a decent standard towards students’ excellence in life [Bharatiyam Vidyalayam] • Identifying and supporting individual students [Bharatiyam Vidyarthi] • Establishing and running Gurukulams for the students with extra-ordinary merit and potential [Bharatiyam Gurukulam] INDEX

  18. Bharatiyam Gurukulam:for exceptionally bright but poor students • Bharatiyam’s way of supporting the exceptionally bright but poor students to realize their true poential. • Some students display higher potential than others. They need to be identified and offered a completely different environment and atmosphere for them to peak and achieve their potential. • BHARATIYAM’s Intervention includes: • Conducting state level assessments/tests to determine the potential of the students and identify the students with exceptional intelligence/promise • Placing these students in top-end residential schools/Gurukulams in the state for high quality education in Gurukulam mode, with high personal attention, through high teacher to student ratio of 1:6 • Providing them the guidance of eminent educators with social consciousness • Developing a more improved Gurukulam Education/Curriculum • Establishing BharatiyamGurukulam(s) for taking students in Classes 8-12 • Supporting students through post-graduation and afterwards, as per their aspirations and potential so that they can achieve their true inner potential INDEX

  22. Live and let live • We have hope that poverty is eradicable with education, employment, entrepreneurship and direct action on livelihoods • We have faith in the capacity of people to take things in their hands with a little push • We know it is a long way. We can not do alone. We need many players. • We have hope that most of us who have received the benefaction of the society would like to pay back to the society. • All of them join hands in this our endeavor to build a movement – people for planet and planet for people – for decent education, livelihoods and life for all. INDEX

  23. Our Plan in Action: SPROUTS • In order to initiate our plans, Bharatiyam adopted its first school: SPROUTS at Karimnagar. • It’s an English medium school that sets an example as to how a child should be nurtured from the early stages. • Bharatiyam sponsors 250 students per year in a one acre campus and offers quality education for a heavily subsidized price. • At this school, a student goes through challenging classes, gets personal attention, increases general knowledge, and learns to become a healthy part of the society. • They’re provided with the necessary resources required to become strong leaders. • In addition to that, the teachers are very skilled and undergo teacher training very often. • A specially devised curriculum helps them get educated in a much more interactive manner. • Extra-curricular activities and science fairs are quite common in this school… where marks are not as important as understanding.
