  1. SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION #3 #2 #1 #4 #5 CC BY-NC Ryan Le Moual

  2. SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION • TIME – Positive (shown with caption “already won”), focus on same-sex couples • Phnom Penh Post – Neutral, talks about sex worker who tells her side of the job • Washington Post – Neutral, highlights sexual orientation but primarily focuses on the sporting aspect • CNN – Negative, the article itself could be considered neutral as there is no opinion but it focuses on a negative law • Digital Spy – Positive, language used “gladdened my heart” CC BY-NC Ryan Le Moual

  3. Alternative cover for each gender SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION Statement, not question Shown as normal people – not famous Definitive positive judgement Both partners framed in shot, clear meaning Kissing – act of love Clearly positive overall – celebrates diversity and LGBT community

  4. SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION Hinting more towards the sport than the orientation Positive image – smiling, meeting fans Neutral overall – no judgments made on orientation (positive or negative) Doesn’t mention the word “homosexual” – avoiding? Returns focus to basketball Shown as non-judgmental

  5. Negative denotation SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights NaviPillay also denounced the law, saying it institutionalizes discrimination and could promote harassment and violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Talks about both sides of the story LGBT community seen as “unnatural”, talked about negatively Taken to extremes – “life in prison” Backs up with claimed scientific evidence – attempting to prove a point

  6. SEXUALITY REPRESENTATION Alternative readings The article could be seen as neutral as although the title is negative, the second half of the article counters the first half with criticism on the new laws. Many have already left the country in fear of violence, Onziema said, and among those who stay, many are stopping their activism. Onziema, however, says he is not afraid. He says he won't let the law take away his voice. Some may consider the article neutral because the ending is open to interpretation, as further action has not happened yet. This also shows the LGBT community in a less negative light, and connotes they are strong and willing to stand up for their freedom.
