  2. In May of 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

  3. All that were sent were very bold. They sought three things: Glory God and Gold

  5. The English came in 1607. It was not their idea of a typical heaven.

  6. They learned independence from one John Smith And the House of Burgesses settled any tiffs.

  7. The Pilgrims followed soon after that And in 1620, wrote the Mayflower Compact.

  8. The rule of law was a major tool-- No kings for them--they wanted self-rule!

  10. Then in 1754, The French and British went to war.

  11. All alone the British could not stand, So the colonists had to lend a hand.

  12. The war was costly for the king So the tyrant taxed his British tea. The colonists did not want to pay, They dumped his tea into Boston’s bay.

  14. After the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Americans knew troubled times were near.

  15. Lexington and Concord mark the spot I wonder who fired that very first shot?

  16. "Give me liberty or give me death!" Patrick Henry said with all of his breath.

  18. In '76, Jefferson declared independence.

  20. The Treaty of Paris ended the war, And in 1783, America was born.

  21. The Articles of Confederation were not so great, So the delegates started with a brand new slate.

  22. We needed new laws and strong leadership In 1787, our Founding Fathers made the trip After Great debate behind closed doors, The Constitution became our government’s core.

  24. Anti-federalists added the Bill of Rights Amendments 1-10 are full of might People rule through democracy, And protect American Liberty.

  25. Washington was the father of our great nation He said farewell and to maintain isolation.

  28. Louisiana was purchased in 1803, Jefferson doubled U.S. territory.

  29. Madison’s War of 1812 protected sailors and the West While nationalists shouted “America is the best!”

  30. Monroe had a doctrine that forced Europe away And said we would fight if they wanted to stay

  33. Here comes the Industrial Revolution We grew more cotton with Whitney’s invention. Immigrants and farmers became more urban Thanks to trains, canals, and Robert Fulton.

  34. America now started pulling away Their regions grew more distinct each day. The North and South did not agree On tariffs, land, or slavery.

  36. Calhoun argued for nullification Webster spoke for Union--notsecession! Then came Clay to solve the disputes. His compromises cooled many hot feuds.

  37. Now, it's time for the Mexican War, They didn't like Texans coming in their back door. When all of it was said and done, America now stretched clear to Oregon.

  39. When gold was discovered in '49, 1000s rushed to claim their mines.

  40. Wagon trails stretched from sea to sea, In search of our Manifest Destiny.

  41. Along came Lincoln, a tall & slender man, He became the 16th president of our great land. One month after he was elected, South Carolina left and the Union dissected.

  43. The Civil War ended in 1865, 620,000 gave their lives. What we gained from this catastrophe Were 3 amendments and the end of slavery.
