  9. Let’s Think and Share Writing is a way for students to communicate their thinking and provide evidence of their literacy. Writing should not be isolated from the reading experience. Share your thoughts with a partner about how you can adapt your curriculum to provide students more opportunities to engage in the read-think-write cycle. (Rally Robin)

  15. Key Steps for SUSD to Transition to Implementing Common Core Standards in Writing 1. Add Constructed response and performance task items to the benchmarks in 2013-14: Benchmark One • Remove the Benchmark 1 writing prompt • Add 2 Constructed Response items (assesses short response) • The rest of the benchmark will stay the same. Benchmark Two • Remove the Benchmark 2 writing prompt • Add a Performance Task to BM2 (assesses one of the text types/genre) • The rest of the benchmark will stay the same.

  16. Key Steps for SUSD to Transition to Implementing Common Core Standards in Writing 2. Adjust the pacing guide for writing to include the new writing text types

District Action Steps May 2013 • Writing pacing and assessment is shared with staff • District/sites collect feedback from staff on writing pacing guides and need for support to implement the writing shifts August 2013 • Teachers begin to practice reading–thinking-writing (Literacy Cycle) lessons starting in August (Grades K-12) • Convene CC Teacher teams: • Grades K-2 team to backwards map Grade 4 ELA standards • Grades K-12 team to further develop writing and ELA roll out • PD for explanatory writing and CR for Grades 3, 5, 6 in Sept. • BM1 includes 2 CR items (Grades 3-12 ) • PD for opinion/argumentative writing and PT for K-12 in first semester • BM2 includes a PT item using Opinion/Argumentative writing
