Do Now

Identify the following as either Chemical or Physical properties:

The density of sulfur is 2.97 g/cm

The melting point of ice is 100 degrees C

Hydrogen burns in air

It combines with oxygen to form water

It is a yellow, powdery solid

It reacts with hydrogen to form a gas

SWBAT identify the difference between chemical and physical properties

chapter 2 section 2 hw review
Chapter 2 Section 2 HW Review
  • Classify as chemical or physical properties:
    • Shiny/Silvery Physical Property
    • Melts easily Physical Property
    • Density of 2.3 g/cm Physical Property
    • Tarnishes in moist air Chemical Property
  • Identify which is NOT a chemical property:
    • Reacts with water
    • Boils at 100 degrees
    • Is red
    • Does not react with oxygen
  • Describe uses for plastic, why is it a good choice?
    • Plastic can be used for almost anything! It is a good choice because it’s properties allow it to be molded into different things easily.

3) Describe characteristic properties, list some:

  • A characteristic property includes both chemical and physical properties. Reactivity, flammability, color, shape, texture etc. are all characteristic properties.

4) Calculate density of a rock

  • Density = Mass / Volume
  • Density = 454 g / 100 cm
  • Density = 4.54 g/cm

5) Calculate density of a substance

  • Density = Mass / Volume
  • Density = 0.36 g / 2500 cm
  • Density = 0.000144 g/cm
choice board
Choice Board
  • Density Problems Worksheet
    • Completion of the density worksheet, showing all work
    • Supplies: Density worksheet, pen or pencil
  • Poster-Making
    • Create a poster comparing Physical & Chemical properties
    • Supplies: Construction Paper, Glue, Scissors, Colored Pencils
  • States of MatterBrochure
    • Create a themed brochure that explains the various states of matter using facts from the textbook: solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
    • Supplies: Plain white paper, colored pencils
density problems worksheet
Density Problems Worksheet
  • For this worksheet you will calculate the density and determine what the substance is by comparing it to a chart.
  • Must complete both sides by the end of class!
poster making
Poster-Making
  • You will be given index cards and selected words, you must compare the chemical properties to the physical properties and draw an example of the property on an index card.
  • For example: if the word is reactivity, you might draw something reacting, or bubbling
brochure
Brochure
  • In the brochure you want to fold the paper into 3 pages to describe the solid, liquid, gaseous and plasma state.
    • What the states are
    • What the particles look like
    • What the movement of particles is like
    • Drawing of the particles and examples
