  6. Reflect and Share: Progress Since 4/11 3 programming strategies you’ve decided to include in your plan for individualized academic support and enrichment 2 ways you’ve engaged teachers in the development of your plan 1 stakeholder group you’re struggling to engage 6

  7. ELT Proposals Can Get Complicated… Teacher Collaboration Activities Individualized Academic Support The result: a scattered, unfocused, laundry list of (possibly good) ideas. Data Systems School & District Leadership Enrichment Opportunities Core Instruction 7

  8. The key to a strong, feasible plan isFocus and Coherence School & District Leadership Core Instruction All the elements of your plan should connect to your school-wide focus and a small set of priorities for school improvement Teacher Collaboration Activities Individualized Academic Support Data Systems Enrichment Opportunities The elements should all be reflected in your redesigned student and teacher schedules and calendars 8

  9. For example: Expanded literacy block added; clear plan for developing and implementing school-wide, cross-curricular writing strategies New schedule for bi-weekly ILT meetings; clear plan for ILT to lead collaboration teams school-wide Our School’s “Big Three” Time to focus on writing Time for cross-grade level collaboration Time for arts electives for all students New daily intervention periods will utilize adaptive software to target ELA and math needs, and incorporate open-response skills practice Bi-weekly early release for cross-grade PD and collaboration; focus will be on writing Administer and analyze new writing assessments every 4 weeks for all grades; teams will create re-teaching plans based on assessments Plan for each student to participate in one partner-led arts elective and one teacher-led literacy-based elective each semester 9

  10. Work Time Take 15 minutes NOW to create a plan for the next 2 hrs: ID key tasks and roles. Each team will report out to the larger group what you’ll be working on before getting started. Use this time as it best fits your team’s needs. Some suggestions: • ID what decisions your team has made and what questions still need to be answered – graphic organizer provided (page X) • Split your team into subcommittees to tackle different sections of the RFP; focus on the school-level report • Workshop a few draft schedules/calendars • Outline your school-level report for the RFP • Check your draft plan for coherence as it takes shape: are the different elements all connected to your focus and priorities? Graphic organizer provided (page X) 10

  11. Keep Communicating! Watch out for the rumor mill…be proactive! • Continue to communicate your key messages • Provide a faculty/staff update by Friday 4/27: • What did your team do/learn today? • What parts of the draft plan are taking shape? • What are your next steps? • Tell them how they will actively participate in developing the plan for the May 18th submission deadline • Continue to reach out to partners – current and potential: • Outreach Letters • One-on-one meetings • Community Forum 11

  12. Building Support: Gaining Buy-In “Leaders do not gain buy-in through inspiration, demands, pleading, or seminars. They gain buy-in through getting results that demonstrate that the effect of the change is in the best interests of all stakeholders.” “If you deliver a change . . . - all in one year or less – then you don’t wait for “buy-in,” but rather you make the change and use the results to gain sustained support.” Douglas B. Reeves (2009), Leading Change in Your School. pp. 86-87 ASCD

  13. Building Support: Gaining Buy-In Split your team in half. Have one group read “People Just Naturally Resist Change, Right?” and the other half read “Resistance to Change: Reasons and Strategies”. Discuss the key themes of each piece and make a plan for working with your resistors (activity on the bottom of page X) Update you Communications Plan 13

  14. Update Your Communications Plan What’s the best vehicle to reach each stakeholder audience? 14

  15. Next Steps Planning Use this time to create a plan of attack for writing your proposal – this checklist breaks down the components of the RFP 15
