Missouri MOve Smart Child Care • Physical Activity Guidelines for Child Care • Core Requirements • Intermediate Requirements • Advanced Requirements • Goal: Increase the opportunities for and the quality of physical activity in child care settings. Reduce sedentary time and long periods of inactivity.
Core Requirements Amount of Physical Activity At least 90 minutes of physical activity each day. Per licensing rules at least 60 of these minutes should be obtained outdoors unless prohibited by weather or special needs. The physical activity should consist of: • Structured Activity - At least 30 minutes of teacher led activity each day. • Unstructured Activity - At least 60 minutes of unstructured activity each day.
Core Requirements (cont). • No Playtime Withheld • Physical activity is never withheld as punishment. • Equipment Available • Indoor play equipment meets the requirements specified in licensing rules for child care facilities. A facility is not recognized for meeting the core requirements.
Intermediate Requirements Center Chooses 4 of 9 additional standards: • Additional Physical Activity • Indoor Physical Activity • Learning Integrated • Screen Time • Written Policy for Facility • Staff Education and Training • Sedentary Time Restricted • Visual Promotion of Physical Activity • Staff Participation and Role Modeling
Advanced Requirements Center meets all 12 standards
Recognition Poster and certification Center name mentioned in the Healthy Child Care Newsletter Center name posted on the MOve Smart web site Local press release Letter to parents
What’s New Family Style Meals flyer: updated and more colorful Developed in coordination with the Bureau of Environmental Health Services and the Center for Local Public Health Services States that DHSS supports family style meals in child care Includes food safety tips and guidelines
