  3. Outlining • It’s a road map complete with symbols! • Highlights your main ideas, support, and analyses • Everything must be broken down at least twice! (A. & B., 1 & 2, etc.) • Can be phrase or full sentence “Good speakers run with it. Great speakers PLAN to run with it.”—Gleissner

Outlining • Introduction (written in paragraph form ) • Main Idea/topic • Support/evidence • Additional support/explanation • Relevancy of the example—the “so what” factor • Support/evidence • Additional support/explanation • Relevancy of the example—the “so what” factor “Good speakers run with it. Effective Attention-grabbers • Introductions… • Attention grabber • Thesis • main idea/purpose of the speech • One sentence • Preview Statement • highlight the major topics of your presentation in the order in which you will present them • Typically one sentence • Usually separate from thesis Speech Structure Quote Shocking statistic/fact Anecdotes Humor Imagine this… Audience interaction Clarity is key!

Planning tips… • Put your transitions on your outline! • Do a timing after every section of your outline. • Check your topic sentences…are they in line with your thesis? • Highlight your engaging moments…literally…so you know they exist. • Body… • Plan your transitions! • Repeat method is common • Creative one-liners, sayings, comments, clever connections work • T.E.r.A (Gleissner’s version of TEA) • Good, old fashioned writing never hurt anyone  • The “so what” factor matters the most! Connect to the human side of things! Speech Structure Clarity is key!

Avoid… • Conclusions… • Restate your thesis • Review Statement • Reviews the major topics/points of the speech • Typically one sentence • Memorable Close • Connects back to the attention grabber in some crafty way • End with an unforgettable statement about the subject • Saying, “In conclusion…” • Restating the attention grabber word for word. • Bringing up new information or ideas Speech Structure Clarity is key!

Practice Tips: • Good: • Prolonged moments of eye contact • Gesturing at moments of emphasis • Poised • Vocal inflections/vocal variety • Great: • Continuous eye contact; only brief moments of “thought gathering” • Natural/conversational gesturing throughout the speech • Purposeful floor movement • Natural/conversational vocal quality • Always stand up to practice • Time it! • Deliver to peers/parents • Videotape! • Practice makes PERMANENT, not perfect. Delivery Good to great is gradual.
