CAREERS IN FASHION INDUSTRY Fashion is a term commonly used in relation to clothes, dresses, garments, textiles, etc. Fashion designers create designs for almost anything which is a part of the garment of men, women and children. Fashion design is the most important area of work in fashion industry. Designing involves creating original designs after studying the changing trends of the market i.e market research. It has various fields of specialization like garments, footwear, jewellery and even luggage. 

    42. Apparel Merchandising   Fashion Merchandisers are mainly responsible for marketing. He/she has to study past and current sales data and analyse trends. They have to collect specifications from the buyers, coordinate with fashion designers and production team to develop a product which meets market requirement. They must have knowledge of fashion trends, textures, materials and colours on one hand and understanding of market demand and the production processes on the other. At the same time have analytical ability and communication skills.  Visual merchandising  a comparatively new career field which has sprung up with the growing popularity of window and floor displays. Visual merchandisers main area of work is to create impressive window displays. They can find employment with fashion boutiques, shopping malls, emporia etc. They are also engaged as shop floor managers. They can also do freelancing on contract basis for window displays in exhibitions, fairs and other places. 

    43. Fashion Journalism and Presentation Fashion Journalist is an overall in-charge of a fashion magazine. It is through them that the general public gets to know the latest fashion trends.  He/she should have excellent taste for fashion and keep themselves abreast with latest fashion news, consumer reaction to new collections, fashion shows, current and future trends in colour, design and fabric.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FASHION DESIGNING AND FASHION TECHNOLOGY Both fashion designing and fashion technology occupy a distinctive place in our industries.   While fashion designing deals with the creation of beautiful dress materials, fashion technology is the art of creating cloth materials from a variety of products. Fabrics are generally made out of substances like silk, nylon, polyester and cotton. Generally dress materials) is made according to the demand of the customer and at other time for a fashion show or boutique. –Fashion merchandising

PUBLIC RELATIONS Public Relation is a management function that involves monitoring and evaluating public attitudes and maintaining mutual relations and understanding between an organisation and its public. Public Relation officers work with journalists, managers and employees of an organisation and members of the public. They have to be good at getting on with them. The basic personality ingredients for success in PR work is sociability, tact, patience and diplomacy. Public relation officers can find employment in the corporate sector, public sector, government agencies, tourist agencies, hotels, banks and other financial institutions, private consultancy firms etc. The work involves keeping management aware of public attitudes and concerns of the many groups and organizations with which they must deal. In addition, public relations departments employ public relations specialists to write, research, prepare materials, maintain contacts, and respond to inquiries

    54. Airlines: In the airlines, one can work as Traffic Assistance, Reservation and Counter Staff, Airhostess and flight pursers, Sales and Marketing staff and customer services. A course in travel and tourism or a qualification on Hotel management helps to get in.

    55. Travel Agencies: Travel agents assess the needs of tourists and businessmen and help them make the best possible travel arrangements from the many travel options available. They deal with almost everything connected with travel including the shortest route to the destination, travel mode, the important documents that will be required (visa, passport, vaccination certificates etc.), suitable places to stay, current exchange rates, tourist attractions to visit, climate and they will plan the trip keeping in mind the clients' preferences, budgets and special needs. In travel agencies there are openings for reservation and counter staff, Sales and Marketing staff, Tour escorts and tour operators, cargo and courier agencies etc. A short tem course or a diploma in travel and ticketing of 3-6 months duration will help gain entry into an agency. Several large travel agencies also offer short-term training programmes, and tend to absorb most of the candidates

    56. HOTEL INDUSTRY Hotel Industry has a great variety in terms of size, clientele it aims to serve, and its location. However, for the efficient functioning of any hotel – large or small, work is divided among key departments – Management, catering, front office, housekeeping, accounting, marketing, engineering, forecasting. Front Office It is the centre of all activities. Important functions of receiving the guests, making room reservations, handling correspondence and preparing bills and keeping accounts of the guest services are handled at the front office. House Keeping The work of keeping the hotel, the rooms, the bars, the restaurants etc. clean and making it presentable to the guests and ensuring facilities and comfort to them is handled by this department. Accounting Department This department deals with both cash and credit transactions, i.e all the financial transactions like purchase of materials, offering of services to the guests etc. This department also compiles information required for budgeting, pricing of food and services and so on. Professionals like cash, cost and works accountants are given higher positions in the department. Chief cashier, cash clerk/bill clerk are the positions handled in this department. Sales & Marketing This department keeps in touch with travel agents and tour operators as well as other potential corporate clients in order to sell hotel facilities. Advertising and Public Relations is also normally handled by this department.

    66. JOB PROSPECTS: Production jobs - This covers food preservation, dress-making, specialized cooking. Graduates of Home Science can go on to enter the textile business, fashion designing etc. or even work in hotels and in food industry etc. Research jobs - These involve educating specific segments of the population such as mothers, farmers, and villagers on the food-value of certain food items. Also one can work as a researcher/scientist in R&D labs on food preservation etc. Sales jobs - Sales promotion of food items (baby foods) are given to home science graduates since they have relevant information and experience.  Service jobs - Maintenance and supervision of house keeping departments at tourist resorts, hotels, catering facilities, restaurants etc.  Teaching jobs - The recognized qualification for a primary school teacher is a Bachelors degree in Home Science and many postgraduates are absorbed as senior secondary school teachers and college professors.  Technical jobs - Manufacturing industries do require home science graduates to serve as research assistants

    70. BTech/BE: Engineering is one of the sought after careers in India today.. You can appear for all the engineering entrance exams both at the state level and at the national level for admission to BTech programs. National level exams include IIT-JEE, AIEEE, and NATA. Institutes like BITS Pilani, BIT Ranchi, NITIE Mumbai also conduct entrance exams for admission to various engineering programs. B.Arch: If you feel that you have great imagination, ability to visualize things and you are good at drawing, you can pursue a course in architecture. Specific area of study and work which deals with design, plan of buildings and structures Bachelor in Architecture is a 5 year long undergraduate course. For admission to most architectural colleges, the eligibility is 50 percent marks in HSC or equivalent, with physics, chemistry and maths as compulsory subjects but you need to clear the entrance exam as well called NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) exam.

    71. B.Sc Electronics (H): A degree in B.Sc. (Honours) Electronics covers all the key concepts required to become a successful professional. The course provides students with skills which are required to design electrical, electronic, computer, automation and communication systems. Opportunities are available in research and development, aerospace and defense electronics, design, testing, production, inspection, quality control, project management and technical sales. BSc STATISTICS : Students with a degree in B.Sc. Statistics are eligible to apply for various jobs in Banking, IT,  Quality control etc. They can even take up Actuarial Science as a specialization and join in various financial and share trading companies. In the government sector, UPSC carries out entrance exam as to recruit candidates to the Indian Statistical Services. For this a Masters in Statistics or math’s is required to apply for the post. The SSC also carries out a recruitment process as to appoint eligible candidates in to the Statistical Investigators post.
