  1. Chapter 7: Male Reproductive System Medical Terminology

  2. Chapter 7 Abbreviations • AIDS • BPH • DRG • ELISA • HIV • HPV • M • acquired immune deficiency syndrome • benign prostatic hypertrophy • diagnosis related group • AIDS test (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) • human immune deficiency virus • human papillomavirus – causes genital warts • male

  3. Chapter 7 Abbreviations • PSA • STD/STI • TUR • TURB • TURP • prostate-specific antigen • sexually transmitted disease/ infection • transurethral resection (prostate or bladder) • transurethral resection of the bladder • transurethral resection of the prostate

  4. The Male Reproductive System • The Function • Produce, sustain, and transport sperm, the male reproductive cell, and to secrete the hormone testosterone

  5. The Male Reproductive System • Organs of the Male Reproductive System • Testis, or testicle • Primary male sex organs, paired, oval-shaped, and enclosed in a sac called the scrotum • produce spermatozoa (sperm) and testosterone • Sperm • The microscopic germ cell, which, when united with the ovum, produces a zygote (fertilized egg) that with subsequent development becomes an embryo

  6. The Male Reproductive System • Testosterone • The principal male sex hormone. • Its chief function is to stimulate the development of the male reproductive organs and secondary sex characteristics such as facial hair • Seminiferous tubules • Approximately 900 coiled tubes within the testes in which spermatogenesis occurs • Epididymis • Coiled duct atop each of the testes that provides for storage, transit, and maturation of spermatozoa; contains the vas deferens

  7. The Male Reproductive System • Vas deferens, ductus deferens, or seminal duct • Duct carrying the sperm from the epididymis to the urethra. The spermatic cord encloses each vas deferens with nerves, lymphatics, arteries, and veins • The urethra also connects with the urinary bladder and carries urine outside the body. A circular muscle constricts during intercourse to prevent urination • Seminal vesicles • two main glands located at the base of the bladder that open into the vas deferens. The glands secrete a thick fluid, which forms part of the semen

  8. The Male Reproductive System • Prostate gland • Encircles the upper end of the urethra • Secretes a fluid that aids in the movement of sperm and ejaculation • Scrotum • Sac suspended on both sides of and just behind the penis • The testes are enclosed in the scrotum • Penis • Male organ of urination and copulation (sexual intercourse)

  9. The Male Reproductive System • Glans penis • enlarged tip on the end of penis • Prepuce • fold of skin covering the glans penis in uncircumcised males (foreskin of the penis) • Semen • composed of sperm, seminal fluids, and other secretions • Genitalia (genitals) • reproductive organs (male or female)

  10. Word Parts for Male Reproductive System Combining Form Definition • balan/o • epididym/o • orchid/o, orchi/o, orch/o, test/o • prostat/0 • vas/0 • vesicul/o • glans penis • epididymis • testis, testicle • prostate gland • vessel, duct • seminal vesicle

  11. Word parts commonly used with Male Reproductive System Combining Form Definition • andr/o • sperm/o, spermat/o • -ism • male • spermatozoon (pl. spermatozoa), sperm • state of Suffix Definition

  12. Med Terms (from word parts)[Disease and Disorders] Term Definition • anorchism • balanitis • balanorrhea • benign prostatic hyperplasia • cryptochidism • epididymitis • orchiepididymitis • orchitis, orchiditis, or testitis

  13. Med Terms (from word parts)[Disease and Disorders] Term Definition • prostatitis • prostatocystitis • prostatolith • prostatorrhea • prostatovesiculitis

  14. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Disease and Disorders] Term Definition • hydrocele • testicular cancer • varicocele • scrotal swelling caused by a collection of fluid • cancer of the testicle, usually occurring in men 15 to 35 years of age • enlarged veins of the spermatic cord

  15. Med Terms (from word parts)[Surgical Terms] Term Definition • balanoplasty • epididymectomy • orchidectomy, orchiectomy • orchidopexy, orchiopexy • orchidotomy, orchiotomy • orchioplasty

  16. Med Terms (from word parts)[Surgical Terms] Term Definition • prostatectomy • prostatocystotomy • prostatolithotomy • prostatovesiculectomy • vasectomy • vasovasostomy • vesiculectomy

  17. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Surgical Terms] Term Definition • circumcision • hydrocelectomy • radical prostatectomy (RP) • surgical removal of the prepuce (foreskin) • surgical removal of a hydrocele • excision of the prostate gland with its capsule, seminal vesicles, vas deferens, and sometimes pelvic lymph nodes; performed by a retropubic or perineal approach, or laparoscopically; used to treat prostate cancer; used to treat prostate cancer

  18. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Surgical Terms] Term Definition • suprapubic prostatectomy • transurethral resection of the prostate gland (TURP) • excision of the prostate gland through an abdominal incision made above the pubic bone and through an incision in the bladder • used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer (suprapubictransvesical prostatectomy) • surgical removal of pieces of the prostate gland tissue by using a resectoscope inserted through the urethra. The capsule is left intact • usually performed when the enlarged prostate gland interferes with urination

  19. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Diagnostic Terms] Term Definition • transrectal ultrasound • semen analysis • an ultrasound procedure used to diagnose prostate cancer • sound waves are sent and received by a transducer in the form of a probe that is placed into the rectum. The sound waves are transformed into an image of the prostate gland • microscopic observation of ejaculated semen, revealing the size, structure, and movement of sperm • used to evaluate male infertility and to determine the effectiveness of a vasectomy (sperm count and sperm test)

  20. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Diagnostic Terms] Term Definition • digital rectal examination • a physical examination in which the physician inserts a finger into the rectum and feels for the size and shape of the prostate gland through the rectal wall. • Used to screen for BPH, which usually presents as a uniform, nontender enlargement, whereas cancer usually presents as a stony hard nodule

  23. Med Terms (not from word parts)[Complimentary Terms] Term Definition • condom • ejaculation • gonads • heterosexual • homosexual • cover for the penis worn during coitus to prevent conception and the spread of sexually transmitted disease • ejection of semen from the male urethra • male and female sex glands • person who is attracted to a member of the opposite sex • person who is attracted to a member of the same sex
