  2. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for the commemoration of the centenary of the French Revolution • Gustave Eiffel's design was unanimously chosen out of 700 in a design contest.

Size Specifications • World’s tallest building until 1930 • 300 meters tall with a 20.75 meter antenna • Weighed 7000 tons • 2.5 million rivets. • 300 steel workers, and 2 years (1887-1889) to construct it. • Sway of at most 12 cm in high winds. • Height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature. • 15,000 iron pieces (excluding rivets). • 40 tons of paint. • 1652 steps to the top.

  4. Rejection at birth • 300 people, including Maupassant, Emile Zola, Charles Garnier, and Dumas the Younger, first petitioned against the building of the tower • Almost torn down in 1909, but was saved only because of its antenna which was used for telegraphy

  5. Daring People • Scaled by a mountaineer in 1954 • Parachuted off of in 1984 by 2 Englishmen • Ridden down by a bicyclist in 1923

  6. Restaurant! • The tower has a restaurant (extremely expensive and requires reservations due to the high demand) • Also has a bar, souvenir shop, and the recently restored of office of Gustave Eiffel.

  7. Other facts • 1 person died during construction • ~$9.00 for entrance • Painted with 50 tons of dark brown paint every 7 years
