  2. demonstrators • Noun • People protesting an issue or action • Demonstrators were protesting outside of the Gathering Hall because of the increased shortages in the city.

  3. dread • Verb • Anticipate or expect to happen with great fear • Everyone in Ember dreaded the blackouts.

  4. egress • Noun • A way out or exit; door • The egress was marked “Closed Due to Construction”, so we were detoured.

  5. endeavor • Noun • An attempt to achieve a goal • Lina’sendeavor of climbing onto the roof almost landed her in jail for a day!

  6. endured • Verb • Lasted; put up with • The citizens of Ember endured increasing shortages of food and supplies.

  7. entrance • Noun • A way in to a place • The entrance to the Mayor’s office was roped off which meant no visitors were allowed in.

  8. fascinated • Adjective or verb • Drawn into the interest of something or someone • Doon was fascinated with electricity even though he did not understand it.

  9. frantic • Adjective • Panicky; wild; agitated • Lina was frantic when the guard grabbed her arm and pulled her down the stairs.

  10. fungus • Noun • A form of mold, mildew, yeast; a mushroom. • Fungus grew on the damp walls in the underground tunnels.
