STEM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM Standards of Practice guide STEM instruction by defining the combination of behaviors, integrated with STEM content, which are expected of a proficient STEM student. These behaviors include engagement in inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st century workforce. Congrats to Dominique Mohen By: Michele Hampton On behalf of Sudlersville Elementary School, I would like to congratulate Dominique Mohen. She is one of the finalists who will be recognized at Martin’s West on June 5, 2015 for the Parent Involvement Matters Award. One of these fine candidates will be selected at the State Parent Involvement Matters recipient. I am very proud that Dominique represents all of the fine involved parents that we have in the Sudlersville school/community. Good Luck!!! Dear Family Member: We are asking your support to complete a school climate survey for SES that is being administered by the SWIFT Center. It will help us to guide school improvement and positive learning and teaching environments. Our staff will also complete a survey. The purpose is to obtain your perceptions of our school climate as it relates to your child/children’s well-being, opportunities, and learning. Participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement, and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning. This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that participating parents/guardians cannot be identified from the data. All questions apply to our school only. The results are for the use of our school and school district. Below please find information on accessing the survey. You may take the survey from today through June 30th. We appreciate the opportunity to teach your children and we are thankful for the support you provide throughout the school year. Enjoy your summer and don’t forget to read, read, read! 5. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner JUNE 2015 Math Matters Music Can it be that June is here already? Where did the time go? I am sure I will be saying the same thing at the end of August when we are ready to return to school! Time sure does fly! One thing you need to know is that it doesn’t take too much time for students to lose learned information if they don’t practice it. This summer, help your children by providing opportunities for them to use logic, skills and strategies that they’ve learned. The internet is full of resources, games, suggestions etc. However, don’t forget that board games, puzzles, clever discussions, designing and building with blocks, Legos or even sand is terrific. Don’t forget to read either! These are all good sources for using and sharpening important skills. Look for information coming home about a free website that you and your children can use over the summer. It is called Tenmarks. It is for students entering 2nd grade through Algebra 2 and Geometry. So your older students can use it too! I highly recommend using it at least once a week! Register at: summer.tenmarks.com. Another site to check out is Numbers and Sense. Don’t forget about iReady either. All of our 3rd and 4th graders have a username and password. So do our PFY and intervention students. Whatever you do, is better than doing nothing…so DO SOMETHING! I have enjoyed learning the ropes as the new Math Specialist here at SES and am looking forward to next year! Enjoy your summer! Ms. Kane MARVELOUS MUSIC MEMO Congratulations to all Spring Concert Performers! What a great show!! Field Day at SES!

  7. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner JUNE 2015 The Judy Center has been busy this spring! The pre-k and Kindergarten children are completing a full school year of SEFEL lessons! Ask them about bucket-filling, personal space, self-control, golden words and what they should do when someone is bothering them. We would love to hear feedback from them through you! This week the Kindergarteners learned about personal space with a book called, Personal Space Camp by Julia Cook. Ask them to tell you what happened when their personal space was invaded by someone else when we tried to walk together in a hula-hoop. We have been providing homework help home-visits, academic and behavior support home-visits and Playgroup just went to Godfrey’s today to pick strawberries (see picture below). Summer is right around the corner! School will end soon however, the Judy Center operates year round! We are busy planning summer activities for the Playgroup families as well as scheduling home-visits for children entering pre-k and children who have completed pre-k. The Judy Center has also funded a teacher and an assistant for the Migrant/Title One Summer School here at SES. They will be using our Playgroup room for the month of July. Our mission is school-readiness! We hope if you know of a child in the Sudlersville School zone who will eventually attend SES, you will refer them to us so we can offer them activities and experiences to build school-readiness! Reading • funnies or a sports page about the Orioles or read children’s magazines such as Ranger Rick, National Geographic World and New Moon. • Read a book and then watch the movie version of it. Discuss how the two are alike and different. Some examples of popular books made into movies are: Charlotte’s Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid • Take along a book during empty times such as when you are traveling, at the pool or when your child says he or she is bored. Audio books or e-books can be a fun alternative. • Writing goes naturally with reading. Encourage your child to write, write, write. You can have your child help you make the grocery lists, write post-cards or thank you notes. During a family trip, you could take pictures and encourage your child to keep a journal of his or her adventures. It would make a great memento from the trip. • Have your child keep a reading response journal about the books he or she reads. It can be as simple as a notebook. • Here are some sentence starters that make spark some ideas: “I didn’t understand,” “I liked or didn’t like,” “My favorite part, character or scene was,” and it reminds me of .” • I hope that this list helps inspire some family reading fun. Check out the brochure that will be sent home in your child’s report card from the County. It has some sample websites as well as a suggested list of books for your child from the Association for Library Service to Child. • Summer is the perfect time to read! • By: Rebecca Van Aken, Reading Specialist • As the school year ends and summer vacation begins, it’s time to think about fun family activities to do. Look no further than a good book for inspiration. Reading can be a fun family experience. Here are some tips to help make reading fun for the whole family: • Set a time daily for reading. Reading time could be in the morning, afternoon or before bed, even on the beach. • Read aloud to your child. Even older readers enjoy listening to more complex books. • Connect books to fun summer activities. For example, you could read a book about camping before you go to Tuckahoe or a non-fiction book about the ocean before visiting the Baltimore aquarium. • In addition to using the book lists suggested by the County and Association for Library Services for Children, let your child select his or her own books to read. If your child enjoys reading books about animals, let he or she select a few about lizards, horses or dolphins. • Help your child select a “just right” book for him or her. Listen to your child read. If he or she can read smoothly with expression and accuracy and is able to tell you about the book, it is probably a “just right” book. You can always use the five finger rule. Have your child read the first page from the book. If your child makes five or more mistakes in reading a page of • about 50 words, the book might make • a better read aloud choice. You can • also consult a Queen Anne’s County • librarian and ask them for some • suggested books • Consider magazines or comics as reading material. Your child can read
