Energy Management in Smart Grid • Smart Grid enables new energy generation, transportation, storage, and utilization • Need to understand the current energy usage and best ways to improve • Students will • Understand the basics of smart grid • Collect and analyze energy usage data • Propose new ways of reducing energy usage and better utilizing solar energy • Working with senior researchers in NCEL • Math: 20%, Programming: 50%, Experiments/Analysis: 30%

Mobile Social Networking • Social network is very important in daily life. • Mobile social networking enable new business and social functionalities • Students will • Learn the basics of mobile social networking • Create mobile social apps with innovative functionalities • Working with senior researchers in NCEL • Math: 20%, Programming: 50%, Experiments/Analysis: 30%

Economics of Wireless Networks • Wireless data traffic is fast growing • Email, file downloading, and video • Operators are unclear about the economics • What are the “typical” usage patterns? • “Best” way to price service? • Students will • Design smart phone apps to track user behaviors • Design experiments to understand usage patterns • Experiment different incentive mechanisms • Math: 30%, Programming: 40%, Experiments/Analysis: 30%
