  1. MYRA JANCO DANIELS, FOUNDER If we can help children build a better life, there’s nothing better we can do with our time and money…. Myra Janco Daniels, Founder Each and every member of the Latchkey League can be proud of the number of children we were able to support this past year. I hope that you have enjoyed this season, as I have, and are looking forward to next year. Your board is busy right now planning many special programs and events for next season. I am hoping that each of you will bring a friend, who would be eligible and interested in league membership, to our next meeting on November 15, 2019. We are so pleased to be holding our regular meetings at a new location…the beautiful, recently-renovated Vineyards Country Club. Have a happy, healthy summer. Myra

  2. JUDY TEDDER, PRESIDENT It’s an honor to be your new president, and I look forward to working with our outstanding board. I worked for Myra Daniels for 9-1/2 years at the Philharmonic and followed her to the Latchkey League. My first job was to help Mary Ellen Wubbe with luncheon registrations in 2014. I am very proud of our organization and cannot wait to see it grow even bigger and better this next year with your help. I would like to thank Betty Bailey for her leadership the past two years. Party planning for next year has already started, even though the July 4 Princess Cruise remains to finish up this season. A fantastic committee of party planners is thinking “outside the box” and there will be some marvelous parties and exceptional events coming up. Stay tuned! I hope you are as excited about our next year as I am. With your help it can be tremendous! 2019-2020 LATCHKEY LEAGUE OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS Voting for Latchkey League 2019/20 officers and directors took place at the April 12th, 2019 luncheon meeting. Previously nominations were emailed or mailed to all members informing of the elections which could be made from the floor by any member provided the consent of the nominee has been previously secured. A majority vote of those voting shall constitute the election of the following officers. 4. FRAN COHEN YOUTH CENTER – HILARY SHORE,Director, Fran Cohen Youth Center As April turns to May, the Salvation Army's Fran Cohen Youth Center is wrapping up the After-School Program and gearing up for Summer Camps.   This past school year has been one of growth, transition, development, and excitement. We successfully delivered quality instruction to our students in robotics, 3d printing, engineering, music, theatre, dance, soccer, basketball, football, culinary arts, ceramics, visual art, character building, chapel, education and career readiness, and mental health.   With the help of a solid and passionate group of Latchkey volunteers, we had a vibrant and successful ceramics program this year, which engaged the children to create exceptional pieces of art. We have members helping and generously volunteering their time with homework, reading, and culinary classes.  We have made, maintained, and utilized numerous community partners including but certainly not limited to Youth Haven, Ultimate Garages, Naples Players, NAMI Collier County, New Beginnings, Lions Club, David Lawrence Center, Youth Resource Coalition, FGCU's internship program, and FGCU's Occupational Therapy Program.  This summer brings many children and many opportunities for enrichment. We have many educational field trips scheduled to places such as the Conservancy, The Calusa Nature Planetarium, Crew Water Trust, Marco Island Historical Society, Naples Art Association, Sidney Berne Art Museum, and much more.   As we progress through summer and into fall, you can expect to see a supported and organized music program with a number of class offerings. Conversation and planning sessions have been underway!  We are all deeply grateful for the support and generosity of the Latchkey League and excited for the path ahead! WE THANK YOU … During the Silent Auction at the Sweetheart Soiree, guests had the opportunity to donate to special funding for programs at the Fran Cohen Youth Center. Thanks to these generous donors: ~ Barbara Pulsifer for supporting a child at summer camp ~ Myra Williams and Barbara & William Pulsifer for their support of children’s after-school programs ~ Becky Gilger and Kathy Fina for purchasing culinary supplies ~ Paula Weatherburn-Baker, Joann Johnston, Robert Hicks & Carol Avard, Nancy Ryan, Judy Shanley and Myra Williams for purchasing ceramic supplies ~ Betty Bailey, Kathryn Ernst, Jan Larson, Joann Johnston and Judy Tedder gave over $600.00 to purchase books for the Book Nook

  5. A check in the amount of $2,635 was presented to Hilary Shore at the April 12 luncheon to support the above-mentioned programs. LIONS CLUB EYE AND HEARING TESTS AT FRAN COHEN YOUTH CENTER On April 23, 2019 a special event was held for children of the Fran Cohen Youth Center located on The Salvation Army Naples Campus at 1472 Airport Road South, in Naples. It was a collaboration between Latchkey League members and the Naples Lions Club. The event was coordinated to offer free vision and hearing screenings to all the children who participate in after-school programs at the center. The purpose of the screenings was to identify any problems with vision and hearing that might affect students’ academic performance. Volunteers perform eye exams, provide eye glasses and hearing aids and when necessary refer patients for eye surgery. LATCHKEY CREATIVE CLAY KIDS - JOAN ESHKENAZI With noses and hands pressed against the entry door to the clay room, the latchkey kids could hardly wait to begin to squeeze the clay. With the ages ranging from 5 to 14, spanning two classes meeting on Monday and Tuesday, they explored the pinch pot process, slab techniques and coil construction. Glaze applications completed all works. They were amazed by the high temperatures of the kiln which turned the liquid glaze into a glass coating. With wide eyed wonderment, they watched as a wad of clay became their works of art!

  6. As an introduction to next season, each child was given the opportunity to sit at the potter’s wheel to feel the clay whirl around in their hands. When asked who would like to continue in the fall, all hands went up. The only disappointment was knowing they would have to wait until next fall. This could not have been accomplished without the generosity and exhausting efforts of the volunteers: Nancy Ryan, Judy Shanley, Lynette Merillat, Jane Gephardt, Joyce Dunn and Bob Young. All volunteers had to also learn the clay techniques, and all did extremely well in spite of manicured nails! A special thank you to Judy’s friend, Mary Small, who has enabled us to seek a second pottery wheel. LATCHKEY PARTY – JULY 4TH AT SEA – THURSDAY, JULY 4, 2019 July 4th at Sea aboard the Naples Princess promises a perfect way to spend an evening cruising into the Gulf to watch the sunset followed by a traditional fireworks display. Enjoy a savory buffet dinner while meeting some local veterans joining us to celebrate our freedom. This event was a sell-out last year, so make your reservation today to avoid being disappointed. The cruise is limited to 140 people at a cost of $140 per person. (must be over 21 to cruise) Make your reservations by contacting Judy Tedder 239.254.0843. LL PHOTO ALBUM
