Selected notes from: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops about the Changes to the Mass* This short presentation summarizes the changes you will see starting this Advent as we move from The Sacramentary you know to The Roman Missal we all be using soon. *Based upon Roman Missal Formational Materials provided by the Secretariat for the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2010.

2. Why change things? • Current Sacramentary is the English translation of the Latin Roman Missal. • The Latin missal contains all of the prayers of the Church in their official Latin version. The prayers have been edited over time for the sake of theological precision and some have been written as the second Vatican Council back in 1965. .

3. Brief History • First published in Latin – the preferred & official language of the church that it was originally translated in.. • Second Vatican council maintained a preference for Latin but allowed for a more extended use of the mother tongue – which is why we celebrate Mass in English to help us not only understand it better but to enhance better participation in the Mass by the people.

4. Translation to English • Back then, the translation and the change from Latin to English was done rather quickly – they used a principle called dynamic equivalence which simply put means to simply convey the meaning of the original text rather than give a word for word translation. • After 40 years now of using this text in our worship, we see where the translation might be improved to give it a more word for word translation from Latin to English and be a better translation of the original Latin source text.

5. Translation to English • It was translated now using a principle called formal equivalence to be a more literal word for word translation of the Latin text. • Our current translation had really been more relaxed and so the new translation provides us a more formal, reverential way of praying the liturgy as we are speaking to God. • It will also make more obvious the biblical origin of many of the prayers we say during Mass.

6. Examples • Good example is the change from and also with you to and with your spirit. This expression occurs throughout the letters of St Paul to the early Christian communities. • Another good example is our response to our invitation to communion when the priest says: Behold the Lamb of God… our current response was translated to reflect our spiritual healing by our reception of Jesus. The words we will use is a more direct literal translation of the words of the centurion in the Gospel inspired by his deep faith in the Lord.

7. Why we are changing • They may be uncomfortable at first because the current words have become almost a second nature to us. But the new wording brings us to a deeper appreciation of what the church says to us taken from its original text almost word for word from its Latin roots. • This will lead us to a fuller participation of the Eucharistic liturgy.

8. New Liturgy • New Liturgy effective 1st Sunday of Advent November 28th 2011 • Call to prayer or blessing. • Priest: The Lord be with you. • Congregation: And with your spirit. • ( this becomes our new response for any and all of this occurrence during Mass)

9. Confiteor • I confess to almighty God, • and to you, my brothers and sisters, • that I have greatlysinned, • in my thoughts and in my words, • in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. • (strike your breast) • through my fault, through my fault, • through my most grevious fault. • Therefore • I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, • all the angels and saints, • and you, my brothers and sisters, • to pray for me to the Lord our God.

10. Another version of the penitential rite: • Priest: Have Mercy on us, Lord. • Congregation: For we have sinned against you. • Priest: Show us , O Lord, your mercy. • Congregation: And grant us your salvation. • Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, • forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. • Congregation: Amen.

11. Gloria • Glory to God in the highest, • and on earth peace to people of good will.We praise you, • We bless you, • We adore you, • We glorify you, • Lord God, heavenly King, • O God almighty Father. • Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son • Lord God, Lamb of God, • Son of the Father, • you take away the sins of the world, • have mercy on us;

12. Gloria • you take away the sins of the world, • receive our prayer. • you are seated at the right hand of the Father: • have mercy on us; • For you alone are the Holy One, • you alone are the Lord, • you alone are the Most High, • Jesus Christ, • with the Holy Spirit, • in the glory of God the Father. Profession of Faith - Creed • I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty • maker of heaven and earth, • Of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ • the only Begotten Son of God,Born of the Father before all ages. • God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

14. Creed - continued • begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father. • Through him all things were made. • For us men and our salvation, he came down from heaven: (All bow during these three lines)and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate • of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

15. Creed - continued • For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, • He suffered death and was buriedand rose again on the third day • in accordance with the Scriptures; • he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.He will come again in glory, to judge the living and the dead, • and his kingdom will have no end.

16. Apostles Creed • I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life: • who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, • Who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one holy catholic, and apostolic Church.I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins • And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, • and the life of the world to come. Amen.

17. Offertory - Gifts • Congregation: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands • for the praise and glory, of his name, for our good, • and the good of all his holy Church.

18. Eucharistic Prayer opening • Priest: The Lord be with you. • Congregation: And with your spirit. • Priest: Lift up your hearts. • Congregation: We lift them up to the Lord. • Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. • Congregation: It is right and just.

19. Sanctus – Holy, Holy • Holy, holy, holy Lord. • Lord God of hosts. • Heaven and earth are full of your glory. • Hosanna in the highest. • Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. • Hosanna in the highest.

20. Mystery of Faith • A- We proclaim your Death, O Lord , and profess your Resurrection until you come again. B - When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord,until you come again. C - Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

21. Sign of Peace • Sign of Peace • Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. • Congregation: And with your spirit.

22. Lamb of God • Priest: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. • Happy are those who are called to his supper. • Congregation: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

23. Will it be very different? The new prayers and responses use: • longer sentences that better capture the beliefs we are expressing and celebrating. • a fresher, broader vocabulary that more accurately translates the original Latin • a more formal language style that shows our reverence, awe and wonder as we “talk to the God who made us!” 1 1 add citation for quote from Fr. 24. Will everything change? No! Minor changes: Greeting Response, Gospel Acclamation Substantial Changes: Penitential Act, the Gloria and the Creed. No changes: Scripture Readings, The Lord’s Prayer, and overall Order of Mass are just the same.
