GHG Inventory Construction • CH4 • Predominantly Tier 1 methodology • Tier 2 methodology for cattle and lambs • Dairy cattle EF vary from year to year (liveweight and milk yield multipliers) • Other cattle have constant EF • EF for lambs assumed at 40% that for adult sheep. Lambs assumed to live for 6 months.

GHG Inventory Construction • N2O - Animal Waste Management Systems • UK-specific N excretion values used for livestock categories • 20% of total N excreted assumed to volatilise as NH3 or NOx and therefore deducted prior to N2O loss calculations • Distribution of manure into different AWMS based on UK survey data • IPCC default EFs used for each AWMS category • N2O - Agricultural soils • Follows IPCC methodology

  4. NH3 Inventory Construction • Detailed methodology • Not N flow model • Largely empirical emission factors - derived from UK research • Not good for scenario testing

  5. NH3 Inventory Construction • Excel based • 1 worksheet for Version log • 1 worksheet for all input data • calculation worksheets for different sectors (cattle , pigs, sheep, etc.,) • Summary results sheets • by sector • by AWMS

  6. New Model - NARSES • N flow model • model core engine with user interface • Spatial resolution (10km grid) and monthly timesteps • Include abatement measures for scenario testing

  10. Other Issues Emission Factors • GHG - Should we use more UK-specific EFs from ongoing research. In particular, fraction of deposited NH3 which is leached (0.3 IPCC) appears too high. • NH3 - How frequently should we revise EFs with new research data? • All - move towards modelling EFs from management and environmental data. Could combine data from different countries.
