  2. Dominican Republic • Is located on the island of La Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. • The Western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are shared by two countries.

  3. Capital and Languages • The Capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo which is known as the largest city in that country. • The main language they speak is Spanish but they also speak English sometimes as well.

  4. Population • The population is about 9,927,320 • Ethnic Makeup: White 16% Black 11% Mixed 73%

  5. Flag • Red symbolizes the blood shed in the fight for independence. • Blue stands for the liberty and the expansive sky. • White symbolizes sacrifice, dedication and dignity of the people of the Dominican Republic

  6. Religions • The Religions in the Dominican Republic have been growing and changing but the main one is Roman Catholic. • Protestant Denominations active in the Dominican Republic include: • Assembly of God • Baptist • Church of God • Pentecostal • Seventh-Day Adventist Church

Dominican Family Values • The Family forms the basis of Stability. • The individual derives a social network and assistance in times of need from the extended family, which generally encompasses three generations. • When possible, the extended family lives together or within the same vicinity. • Loyalty to the family comes before any other social relationship, even business • Nepotism is considered a good thing, since it implies employing people who know and trusts, which is of primary importance • The oldest male in the extended family make decisions affecting the balance of the family.

  8. Economy • Dominican Republic has the second largest economy in the Caribbean. • Its an upper middle income is dependent on agriculture, trade, services and especially tourism. • An important aspect of the Dominican economy is the Free Trade Zone Industry.

History • French settlers occupied the western end of the island, which Spain ceded to France 1697, and which, in 1804, became the Republic Haiti • The Haitians conquered the whole island in 1822 and held it until 1844, when forces led Juan Pablo Duarte, the hero of Dominican Independence, drove them out and established the Dominican Republic as an independent state.

Continued • Economic difficulties, the threat of European intervention, and ongoing internal disorders led to a U.S. occupation in 1916 and the establishment of a military government in the Democratic Republic. • The occupation ended in 1924, with a democratically elected Dominican Government. • In 1963, Juan Bosch was inaugurated president.

Interesting Facts • Baseball is a very important part of the Dominican Culture and I find that very interesting because that is my favorite sport. • Most companies require you to be 25 years old while some allow you to be 21. I don’t really like that idea because that means I might not be able to get a job until I’m 21.

Would I like to live there • There are reasons for me wanting to live there and not to live there. • One reason I would want to live there is because I would be able to Baseball all year around even in the Winter. • I also would like to live there because the weather is very nice and never gets cold which is dope because I don’t like cold weather at all.

  14. Reasons not wanting to live there • I wouldn’t want to live there because the vast majority is in poverty. • I also wouldn’t want to live there because it would be very hard to get into college for because they very good in the Dominican Republic.

  15. Italy • Italy is located in Southern Europe a Peninsula that extends out into the Central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. • To the north, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula.

  16. Capital/Languages • Rome is the Capital of Italy. • In Italy they mainly speak Italian and some English.

  17. Population • 60,681,514 is the population counted this year in Italy. • Ethnic Makeup: Italian (includes clusters of German, French, Slovene, Arabian-Italians, and Greek Italians in the South.

  18. Flag • Green means hope, joy and love and in many cultures have a sacred significance. • White means peace and honesty • Red means hardiness, bravery, strength & valour.

  19. Religions • Latin Rite Catholics • Eastern Rite Catholics • Italo-Arabians • Romanian Catholics • Ukrainian Greek Catholics • Armenian Catholics

  20. Italian History • They were under a dictatorship that started in 1922 by Benito Mussolini. • By 1939, Italy had the highest percentage of state-owned enterprises after the Soviet Union. • They were alies with Germany whe Hitler had power there also.

Would I like to live there • A reason I would like to live there is because I love Italian food and could eat it everyday. • I also would like to live there because Italy I’snt in poverty and is a very nice place to live. • I also think Italian people are very nice so I would like to be around them as well.

  22. Italian Economy • They have a Diversified economy with high gross domestic product. • In 2011, Italy was the seventh largest economy in the world and the fourth largest in Europe.
