  1. Orientation for Parents and Students Welcome to La Center ElementaryKindergarten

Overview of our Orientation Opening presentation Visit each of the 7 stations with your child and participate in the activities We encourage you to have your child do the activities as independently as possible while you assist only as necessary. Activities are designed to give you an idea of what to work on over the summer, and what your child needs to be doing by next fall. Welcome to Our School!

  3. Your child will receive a stamp on their passport at each station when the activities are completed. When the passport is full your child will be given a piece of candy After handing in your passport, please visit Ms. Birgensmith to receive a free book from the PTO! Ask questions of any staff member at any time Feel free to move through stations at your own pace Thank you for coming! Welcome to Our School!

You will be called and reminded a few days before the appointment Assessments will be on Wednesday, August 20th (all day), and Thursday, August 21st (AM only) Assessment will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete Please make sure you sign up for an assessment time before you leave tonight If you know anyone who has a child coming to school in the fall and has not registered, PLEASE ask them to sign up ASAP! We would like to know how many children will be attending! Fall Kindergarten Assessments

Assessment Information • Your child will be assessed on: • Letter name and sound knowledge • Counting • Writing their name • Writing numerals 0-10 • Shapes • Motor Skills • Recognizing first name in print • Speech and communication skills • Socialization and work skills • Parents will be asked to wait in a separate room during assessments

  6. Upcoming Events: • Meet and Greet Monday, August 25, 6:30 PM Elementary Playground • For new Kindergartners and their parents • Receive information on which teacher your child will have, attendance schedule, class supply lists and Kindy information • Meet your child’s teacher and other staff • Play on the playground with kindergarten age friends • Get a yummy treat to eat • First Day of School August 27th OR August 28th (depending on which day your child is assigned to) • Your child will only attend for 1 hour the first day, parents will stay with them • Your child must be current with immunizations in order to attend school on the first day • If your child has a Health Care Plan, please give a copy of this to the office • First FULL DAY of School August 29th OR September 2nd

Our kindergarten program is fun, caring, academic and challenging Kindergarten expectations have changed greatly Our teachers take a personal interest in every child, and work very hard to ensure their success Parents and families are encouraged to become involved with the school and classroom, there are lots of opportunities to help out and get involved! PTO Classroom volunteers Classroom donations and parties Participate in at-home projects Assist children at home to reinforce skills that are taught in the classroom. Kindergarten is an Adventure!

Early in the school year, students should be able to: Stay in seats and focus on task for 10 minutes Interact properly with other children their age Follow directions Stay in line Keep hands to themselves Take turns, play fairly and share materials and toys At home: Set clear expectations and consequences Don’t give too many second chances Give instructions using 3 steps Get your child involved in a social activity. Make sure your child has experience working with other adults and children while you are not around Play board games, practice taking turns Learning “School Ready” Behavior

Children should: Clearly express their thoughts and ideas Ask for clarification, instead of waiting for adult help Discuss thoughts, ideas and answers by taking turns, not shouting out Participate in group discussions Listen while instructions are being given or stories are being read Wait their turn to speak Recognize that they may not always get a turn to share their ideas in class Share ideas with peers and adults Enunciating words clearly Speak in a voice appropriate for school (not too loud or soft) Kindergarten Communication

  10. Encourage communication in full sentences Practice using a clear and audible (but not too loud) voice Practice waiting to speak or enter a conversation until others are finished (unless it is an emergency) Encourage asking questions and sharing thoughts Discuss using manners when talking to others Communication Skills at Home
