  3. What is a News Report? • An objective and factual report about an event

  4. For this task: • You make-up details for an event based on the picture and headline • Audience: community, national, or international newspaper • It should not be: an advertisement, personal story, interview • Do not include personal opinion • Write about an event that occurred in the past • Length: 1 page

  7. Tips • Your report needs to be consistent with the headline and photo • Plan your news report—use W5H as your outline • Catch the reader’s interest by writing a good lead/hook • Make-up specific facts and details • Do not include your opinion • Check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization, and clarity • Write like a reporter

Remember Good Writing: • Third person (he, she, it, they) • Active words (bystanders cheered, other players cried) • Use short sentences • Use simple language • Include quotations, “I can’t believe he retired so young” • Use transitions to link your ideas • Plan—use the section for rough notes to get organized first

Checklist for Writing a News Report • Did you identify ONE event? • Did you relate your response to the picture AND headline? • Did you add details to answer W5H? • Does your response contain sufficient information and facts? • Did you divide your work into paragraphs? • Did you use transition words? • Did you include quotations (both direct and indirect)? • Did you use an unbiased tone?

  10. Writing a News Report • Here are some examples from a news report about a space shuttle launch.

  11. The Lead • The news report begins with a “lead” to catch the interest of the reader. • Who, what, where, and when questions are answered early in the report. • An Ontario doctor will be the first physician to practice zero-gravity medicine.

  12. The ‘why’ question is answered in the next paragraph • Dr. Bert Cod, an Ontario family doctor, will conduct experiments in ‘zero-G’ medical treatments on the next launch of the NASA space shuttle on Florida.

  13. Quotations from people involved in the story make the report more interesting: • “This is totally new territory for me,” said Dr. Cod, when he was interviewed in his office yesterday. “It will be quite a change from writing prescriptions and giving shots to babies.” • The “space doctor,” as he is now being called by some of his patients, will have to spend several months training for the mission. “We’re sure going to miss him while he’s away,” stated patient Grace Howell. “I guess we will have to go to the walk-in clinic until he gets back from NASA.”

  14. The final paragraph summarizes and concludes the report • The next shuttle launch is expected at the end of the year.

  16. What is this task? • Expressing your opinion • The longest piece you will write • You need to have 3 paragraphs (paragraph divisions must be clear)

  17. How do I organize my work? • Into three distinct paragraphs • Introduction • Body • Conclusion

  18. What do I include in my introduction? (Paragraph 1) • Your opinion (this is your main idea) • Use sentences like: • I agree with the statement because… • I disagree with the statement because… • Use the topic question as the basis for your topic sentence

  19. What do I include in my body? (Paragraph 2) • Supporting details (proof, facts, examples) • Explain the details • Give reasons for your opinion (Why do you agree or disagree?) • Elaborate your ideas logically

  20. What do I include in my conclusion? (Paragraph 3) • Summarize your opinion • Restate your main ideas

  21. Tips • Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation • Make changes to your writing neatly, clearly • Organize your ideas in the rough notes area first

  22. Is the Internet a useful tool for high school students? • Practice writing a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion

Checklist • Have you written 3 paragraphs? • Is the main idea clearly stated in the opening paragraph? • Does each paragraph begin with a topic sentence? • Have you included 2-3 reasons to support your position? • Are these reasons developed with at least 2 supporting details? • Does the concluding paragraph summarize your position and supporting details?
