  1. Class of 2013 NEWSLETTER Volume 2, Issue 7 June 19th 2013 Principal: Ms C Ní Chianáin Deputy Principal: Mr O’Donnell Congratulations to our Sixth Class on their Graduation. GRADUATION EDITION!!! Congratulations to our Sixth Classes on their graduation from Scoil Colm. As the end of the 2012/13 school year approaches, I would like to say a very special thank you to everyone in our school community who made this another great year for us. In particular, I would like to thank our excellent and dedicated staff members and volunteers, supportive parents and, of course, our pupils. It was another busy year for Scoil Colm and its pupils. The year has simply flown by as we undertook schoolwork and academic achievement, sporting activities, drama, fundraising events and, of course, a successful whole school evaluation. It’s hard to believe that another school year is almost over, although I know that the pupils (and staff!) are very much looking forward to the summer holidays. Although we are sad to see Ms Watkins’ and Ms Coady’s sixth classes finish their primary school days in Scoil Colm, we know that they are entering a new chapter in their lives and wish all the pupils well in secondary school. For this special Graduation Edition of the school newsletter, they have written about their best memories in school. I am looking forward to welcoming the whole school, especially our new boys in second class on Thursday, 29th August for the new school year. In the meantime, I wish you all a happy and healthy summer break. Claire Ní Chianáin CALENDAR OF EVENTS Graduation Mass: Wednesday, 26th June at 11.15am Merit Awards: Wednesday, 26th June at 1.15pm School Closes: Friday, 28th June at 12.00pm. I had a good time in the five-a- side outside in PE. It was fun. We had scrambled egg and toast in cooking class. I liked when we were at the back of the school planting potatoes, carrots, and turnips. Jamie, Room 8 I had a great time at my Confirmation. I liked taking part in the ceremony and I made a lot of money. I really enjoyed the school play at Christmas and the trip to the Ark. In Golden Time, I liked the cookery classes. We made Rice Crispy buns, Top Hats, Granola Treats and scrambled eggs. I learned a lot being out in the garden and the polytunnel. Joseph, Room 9 I liked the coffee morning in October. I liked the food and the costumes. I love playing football in yard with my class. I like gardening also. Planting flowers and watering them. It’s good to get fresh air. I really enjoyed the school play Alas in Blunderland. It made everyone laugh. I enjoyed my Confirmation Day a lot. I liked every one coming to my house afterwards. Kyle, Room 8

  2. Page 2 of 4 Graduation Memories Scoil Colm Newsletter I remember when I was in first class, I thought back then I would not be able for second class in Scoil Colm. Look at me now! I’m in 6th class already. When I came into second class I was so nervous, but after a while I made new friends. My communion was the best and UCD was the best trip ever!! Scoil Colm has lots of activities like polytunnel, raffles, and trips. Sports day is always a highlight; it’s a fun day to enjoy. Scoil Colm has lots of great trips and activities. I’m so glad to have had the support of my best friends! By Daniel, Room 9 My favourite memory of Scoil Colm was when we went to Clara Lara. Another favourite memory was last year when we went to Dublin airport and got on an airplane. We all got to sit in the cockpit. I also enjoyed the sponsored walks and sports days. I have really enjoyed my time at Scoil Colm. We made our Communion on May 16th 2009 and our Confirmation on March 7th 2013. By Aaron, Room 9 I remember when I came into second class not knowing all the boys. I only knew the boys from my own class in St. Agnes’s. In Scoil Colm I remember all the school trips. My favourite trip was to Clara Lara because I had great fun there and there were so many activities to do. Another favourite memory was when we went to the Phoenix Park and rolled down the hill at the papal cross. That was so much fun! My favourite teacher was Ms. Forde because she was fun and brought us on trips and gave us lots of treats. By Liam, Room 9 I remember my confirmation and was thinking it wasn’t long ago when I was making my First Holy Communion. When our class was split up this year I didn’t really know Shane or Adam. Now they are probably two of my best friends. By Adam P, Room 9 I had a great time in Scoil Colm and made a lot of great friends and had a lot of great memories but my favourite memories were starting in second class. I was both nervous and excited but mostly nervous about meeting the principal Mr.Sheedy and my teacher Ms. McCaughey. I loved the trips I had with my class. My favourite trip was UCD; it was full of activities and lots of fun! When I was in 3rd Class, we went on a trip to the Phoenix Park with Ms Harrison, which was a great day. By Conor, Room 9. I remember when we went to the Phoenix Park in 3rd class with Ms. Harrison. In 4th class with Ms Forde we went to Clara Lara, it was so much fun! I made friends with people from other schools. Now we are in sixth class! We made our confirmation this year. It was a really special day. By Evan, Room 9 Scoil Colm is a good school. Two years ago we got the green flag. We go on good trips. Our sports day is always great fun. Our school is a very healthy school, I have some good memories. Thank you Ms. Fallon and Ms. Watkins. By Sean, Room 9 I remember the first trip we went on, I had so much fun. My fondest memory was when we went to Croke Park. We played against St. Maelruain’s and won. Lifting the cup was so special that day. The thing I didn’t really like was the work, but the work taught us so much. I loved playing football on yard everyday with my friends. That was the best. By Adam M, Rm 9 There are so many great memories I have of Scoil Colm. The main ones are Communion and Confirmation. We loved all the school trips, my favourite was UCD, and it was so much fun! There were lots of activities for us to do. I remember playing for the school hurling, gaelic and football teams. I loved all the sports and playing on yard with all my friends. It was hard being split up this year, but we all still see each other. I loved all my years in Scoil Colm and I’m looking forward to secondary school. I’d like to thank all my teachers especially Ms. Watkins and Ms. Fallon. By Dean, Room 9 When I think back on my years in Scoil Colm, playing in Croke Park really stands out. We played in the Junior Hurling Final in May 2010. Running out onto the pitch in Croke Park is something I will never forget. By Shane, Room 9

  3. Page 3 of 4 Graduation Memories Scoil Colm Newsletter My best memory of Scoil Colm is going to great places for our school trips. When I started in this school in 2nd class, my teacher was Ms McCaughey and she was very nice. We went on our first school trip to ‘Let’s Go!’ in UCD and we all had great fun! We went back there in 5th class and a lot had changed. In 4th class, we went to ‘Clara Lara’ and I went canoeing and ‘Petrol Go Karting!’ I had the time of my life there and I would really like to go there again. Another great thing about Scoil Colm is the school plays. My class and I were in ‘Grease Lightning!’ both dressed like boys and girls. It was fun and some of the acting was so real, that it wasn’t even acting! Nobody was injured and nobody broke character, thank god! In 5th class, our teacher, Ms Timbs brought us to the ‘Walkinstown library’ several times and we read so many books, that some of us are now bookworms. I will really miss Scoil Colm and all the teachers we did have and all the ones we didn’t have. But, most of all, I will miss all my friends who I thank for keeping me company for the last 5 years. Au revoir, Scoil Colm. By Aidan, Room 8 My best memories of school are when we went to U.C.D and played the game lacrosse and went on the flickers. My school team got to the semi-finals in hurling. We didn’t do as well in Gaelic as we had hoped but it was still good. Sports day is coming up and it’s lots of fun. The people who come first, second or third get a medal. The person with the most medals gets a trophy. My best memory is helping Paddy Mooney, the school caretaker. By Cian, Room 8 My best memories in Scoil Colm is going out with our caretaker Paddy Mooney and playing for the school Gaelic and hurling teams. It’s good out helping our caretaker. We give out the lunches at 20 past 10 and we do the recycling at one o’clock. All the spare bread we put it in a tray until we are ready and then we throw the bread out to the birds. This year we went on a lot of trips like UCD, bowling, swimming and golfing and an achievement place. We are going on another one before the end of the year. By Brian, Room 8 My best memory is the first day of school. This is because all of the teachers were very nice and kind to all of us. I have gone on lots of school trips. They were all very good especially the one to UCD. I loved playing GAA and hurling with the school. I will miss my friends and Mr Mooney. I will miss Ms Coady and most of all MORGAN AND JAKE! By Craig, Room 8 My best memory in Scoil Colm was when the hurling team made it to the semi finals last year. We were winning by a good bit but it was a good match. My other best memory was when I got lost in Clara Lara. It was very funny. I also remember when we won the hurling final in Croke Park 2 years ago. It feels really weird to be moving out of this school now. It felt like I only started yesterday. But I really had a good time in this school and can’t believe I’m leaving! By Jake, Room 8 Second class: Being welcomed to the school, Having my Holy Communion. Third Class: Greace Lightning play. Fourth Class: I went to Clara Lara and went on the water slide. Sixth Class: Baking and having a good teacher like Ms Coady and Ms Fenlon and getting treats from her. The best English teachers were Mr D Maune, Ms O’Brien, Ms Gilheaneyand Ms Watkins. I am going to miss the teachers and some of my friends. I will also miss the caretaker Paddy and Craig Raymond. By Morgan, Room 8 My name is Michael McGuirk and I have been in Scoil Colm for five years. I have to say they were the best five years of my life. We went on lots of trips and did fun activities. All the teachers are great. The best time in Scoil Colm has been since I started in this school in second class until now. I am going to miss everything about the school and all of the teachers very much. I will definitely be back to visit them. Our Principal of the school Miss Ni Chianáin is great. She is the fairest and nicest principal I have ever had. I am going to miss all of my classmates because I have been in their class for five years in a row and now we are all going to go our separate ways. By Michael McG, Rm 8 My best memory in Scoil Colm was when I was in 2nd class. We had our communion on the 16th of May 2008. In 6th class we had our confirmation on the 7th of March 2013. By Seán, Room 8 One of my best memories was when I went to UCD. It was great. I remember when I scored a cracker of a goal in lacrosse. It felt like a mile away when I scored it. And the second thing I remember was when we went to Clara Lara. I nearly drowned giving Sean Kelly a jockey back because I fell backwards into the water. It was scary but fun. It was great! Another good time was when I went to the Santry running competition with Victor, Jake and Joseph. I can’t believe I’m leaving now, all those years and all those teachers. I had a great time in Scoil Colm and good luck to all of the new second class. By Taylor, Room 8 I started in Scoil Colm in the summer of 5th class. I had to meet my teacher before I started in Scoil Colm. That year I went on a school trip to UCD. This year in 6th class, we went to Tayto Park. My best memories of sixth class are my confirmation day, sports day, golf, gaelic and football. By Stephen,R9 One of my best memories was when I went to Santry. Taylor, Jake and Joseph were on my team. We had loads of fun in all of the races. Another memory was when we went to Clara Lara on our school tour. The place was full of water and the water slide was scary but it was still fun. My favourite part was the go kart, I went on it 8 times. Another good memory was when I made my Confirmation and my First Holy Communion. I remember my first day in Scoil Colm when everybody gathered around me and started asking me about myself. That is something I will never forget. I will always remember all the laughs I had with Ms Fenlon. Also when we went baking, the things we baked were lovely. Another memory is playing for the school football team. We won some and some we lost but we always had fun! I had loads of fun in Scoil Colm. I will miss all my friends, especially Ms Fenlon. All the things she did for us, I really appreciate them. Those are all my best memories. By Victor, Room 8 When I started school here in Scoil Colm I was nervous. I had butterflies my belly. I met my new teacher that morning. She was nice. I made new friends as well. My next favourite memory was when I made my First Holy Communion, I was in second class. I wore a brown suit. It was my first time ever to taste holy bread. My next favourite memory was in 4th class Mr Maune took Niall, Craig and me to the computer room and we had a snooker tournament, the winner got a can of Fantaand jellies. We were once the new juniors in the school and we are now the seniors of the school. We are in sixth class now and we beat the sponsored walk record. We’re going to graduate from primary school then we will be juniors again in secondary school. By Joseph, Room 9
