  1. “What Makes Water Special?”The Water Cycle MST Inquiry Unit Cecilla Lander, Theresa Mangano, Lauren Raifaizen Education 7204 – Summer 2011

  2. What is a cycle? • A cycle is a sequence of stages that happens again and again and again….. • What are some cycles that you already know about? Here are some hints!

  3. Did you guess right? • Butterfly cycle • Frog cycle • Recycling paper, plastic and metal ….Well the water cycle is sort of like recycling because we use the water again and again and again.

  4. Lesson #1 – Round and Round the Water Goes! • Lesson 1 is where students begin the unit by watching a video from studyjamz.com to learn the different phases of the water cycle. At the end students will label the different phases on a diagram like the one shown on the left. You are going to have so much information about those three blank spaces at the end of this unit.

  5. Lesson #2Now We Make the Water Go Round and Round Now we get to use water to make a model of the water cycle by putting it in a covered plastic container. Next we take a quick trip to the computer lab to make a picture using Microsoft Office Paint. Then we uncover the plastic container, add heat and measure the rate of evaporation. We present the results in a bar graph.

  6. Lesson #3What’s in the Clouds? We are going to learn all we want about clouds. Students will find out what happens when all the water gets condensed up there and how to look at the clouds and predict what’s going to come down. After some computer research, we make a model of 4 different types of clouds using cotton ball and paint. You will become creative and stretch those cotton balls to create the level of thinness or thickness you need.

  7. Lesson #4Rain, Rain, Go Away We are going to describe what comes from the clouds, the different forms of precipitation. This trip to the computer lab will give us information on the amounts of precipitation from January to June so that we can create a spreadsheet and bar graph. It’s a great way to combine math, technology and science again.

  8. Lesson #5Moving and Flowing • Lesson 5is where students demonstrate the phases of the water cycle by moving their bodies. It’s a sure crowd pleaser with a student performance at the end starring you! Will your dance moves be better than theirs?

  9. Lesson #6Searching for Water This is the highly-anticipated scavenger hunt lesson where we get to apply our knowledge of the water cycle. Students will visit a special website made just for you..

  10. The Water Cycle Website The website custom-made for you has information to help you learn more about the water cycle. To see what’s in store click here Visit to play a game, watch more videos, or complete another scavenger hunt.

  11. Read All About It • You can find many books about the water cycle. If you like the Magic School Bus Series, here’s one for you.. Click on the book for a preview!

  12. That’s what you will be learning about the water cycle and more. Hope you are looking forward to this unit!
