  1. Flexar- What is it? • A Continuous Level Measurement solution used to quantify material contents in a silo, bin, or tank. • Guided-Wave Radar technology suitable for monitoring the level of powders, granules, and liquids. • Functional in a wide assortment of vessels shapes and industries. • Available in a variety of sensing probes and electronic configurations. Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  2. Flexar- How does it Work? • Microwave (Radar) pulse is generated in electronics and directed down the cable • Pulse is reflected off material surface and back up the cable • Hi-speed electronics measures the pulse time-of-flight (TOF) between pulse creation and pulse return • Time-of-flight is related proportional to distance traveled in open air • Level can be calculated by if vessel height is known. Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  3. Flexar- Why it’s a Practical Solution • Real-time continuous output provides immediate level measurements. • TDR technology (Time Domain Reflectometry) is unaffected by dust, bulk density and temperature. • Focused / directed energy field prevents undesired detection of obstructions within the vessel. • No moving parts to wear which leads to longer operation life Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  4. Flexar- What are keys to Success? It’s as Simple as 1 - 2 - 3 • Measurement Range- Understand relationship between target material and measurement range • Mounting Method- Ensure proper mounting of Flexar to vessel to allow proper signal propagation • Internal Obstacles- Be aware of internal vessel apparatus so mounting can be properly located Monitor Application Engineering is here to help!! Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  5. Flexar- Measurement Range • Material’s Dielectric Constant (Er) determines how strong the reflected radar signal will be and therefore is the key in determining sensing range of Flexar • Probe Style has some effect on reflective strength. But since 99% of powder/bulk solid applications are fulfilled by single cables, probe style is a non-issue. • Split-Architecture configurations create some signal loss in the interconnection electrical wiring and therefore special review is required Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  6. Flexar- Measurement Range Extend known “Er” to line to find max measurement range Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  7. Flexar- Measurement Range How to Read the following Green Yellow Red charts • Dielectric Constant (Er) Range- The applicable material may have a range of dielectric constants, and they will be depicted by horizontal black lines • Good Applications- are depicted by the green graphic range (field proven) • Questionable Applications- are depicted by the yellow graphic range and require closer scrutiny • Poor Applications- are depicted by the red graphic range (unacceptable reflection strengths) Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  17. Flexar- Mounting Methods • Flush Preferred- whenever possible, mount Flexar flush with the vessel’s top surface Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  18. Flexar- Mounting Methods • Nozzle Mounting- if use of nozzle is required, be sure diameter is larger than its height including through concrete walls Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  19. Flexar- Mounting Methods • Nozzle Mounting- if use of nozzle is required, be sure diameter is larger than its height including the portion of the nozzle that is inside the vessel Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  20. Flexar- Internal Obstacles • Area of Influence- The guided-wave-radar energy travels in close proximity to the cable/probe. Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  21. Flexar- Internal Obstacles • Proper Flexar Positioning- Locate cable away from internal obstacles such as filling tubes, let-down ladders and clean-out cages. Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011

  22. Flexar- Application Support • Remember.. It’s as simple as 1 - 2 - 3 • Measurement Range (use reference information) • Mounting Methods (minimize post-sales problems) • Internal Obstacles (don’t get surprised at installation) • Send application details to Monitor Application Engineering for review and recommendations • Leverage the various operator interfaces (HMI2, SiloTrack, and 4-20mA) to meet your customers needs Monitor Technologies, LLC 2011
