  1. S00VISION-20020708-011A WWRF Status & Direction(Wireless World Research Forum) July 12, 2002

  2. Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) • Objective: Secure momentum, strategic orientation, and impact for the research on wireless communications beyond 3G, the “Wireless World.” The “Wireless World” includes evolutionary steps of 3G as well as new concepts. • Open membership, an independent association under Swiss law • About 100 members (July 02; Europe, America, Asia; manufacturers, academia, operators) • Content of work so far: Book of visions 2001 • reflects contributions and discussions at WWRF meetings • description of technological issues facing the industry • collection of research tasks to address these issues • Input to research programs and standardization • http://www.wireless-world-research.org/

  3. WWRF - Objectives and Scope • Major objectives • to contribute to the vision of the Wireless World • to develop and maintain a consistent vision of the Wireless World • to generate, identify, and promote research areas and technical and society trends for mobile and wireless systems towards a Wireless World • to identify and assess the potential of new technologies and trends for the Wireless World • to contribute to the definition of international and national research programs • Scope • concentrate on the definition of research items relevant to the future of mobile and wireless communications, including pre-regulatory impact assessments • WWRF is not a standardization body • invite world-wide participation and is open to all actors

  4. WWRF - Organization • WWRF provides a global platform for academia and industry • to discuss results • to exchange of views • to identify areas where research is needed • to initiate global co-operation towards systems beyond 3G • Major objective of global co-operation is to achieve harmonization of views • WWRF is an open organization with global membership • WWRF is a contribution driven organization • Major deliverables • Book of Visions 2000 • Book of Visions 2001 • White papers on certain topics under preparation • Reference model • These deliverables will influence research projects on global scale

  10. WWRF and other Regional Research Programs • FP6 = Framework for EU public R&D funding for 2003-2006, proposed ICT-budget 3.6 Beuro, first calls autumn 2002 • WWRF is a discussion forum, EU proposals not formally from WWRF, but are based on WWRF discussions. • The WWRF initiative aims to stimulate the creation of regional research programs, e.g., in the US, Japan, Korea, China, etc. • A close co-operation of these programs via WWRF is very much welcome • WWRF intends to harmonize ideas and to provide a platform for information exchange

  11. WWRF and 3GPP2 Vision • The WWRF is identifying research areas for Beyond 3G. These may be helpful to 3GPP2 in defining it’s vision. • 3GPP2 member companies are encouraged to learn more about WWRF and the work they are doing. • 3GPP2 should consider using some of the output of WWRF (where appropriate) as input to the 3GPP2 Vision Document.
