  1. MRS 43 9/17/13 Mrs. CabaneroAim: To be able to divide rational expressions and polynomials Do Now: Simplify.1. 2.

  2. Name _________ HW#5 Pd __ 9/17/131. Divide .2. 3. 4. Subtract from

  3. Name ___________ Pd __ HW#4 9/16/13Simplify.1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is the difference when issubtracted from ?

  4. Example: Divide and simplify.Step1. Multiply by the reciprocal.Step2. Factor and cancel.Step3. answer

  5. Dividing a Polynomial by a PolynomialStep1. Arrange the terms of the dividend and divisor in standard form.Step2. Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term of the divisor. This is the first term of the quotient.Step3. Multiply the first term of the quotient by the divisor and place the product under the dividend.Step4. Subtract this product from the dividend.Step5. Bring down the next term.Repeat steps 2-5 as necessary until the degree of the remainder is less than the degree of the divisor.

  6. Answer: quotient + Check: quotient divisor + remainder

  7. Example1. Divide and check.

  8. When the dividend(or divisor) is in standard form and a power is missing, add a term of that power with 0 as its coefficient.Example2. Divide

  9. Example3.

  10. Practice: Divide.
