  3. Diffusion • Began in Makkah and Madinah • Did NOT spread primarily by means of war • Later spread to the Turks, Indians, and Malay-speaking parts of the world • Has spread to Africa in the past two centuries • Today: grows in Africa, Europe, and America

  6. Holy Places • Mecca is the holiest place in Islam • Kaaba, the "House of God • The Masjid al Haram (Sacred Mosque)
