  2. LEGAL BASIS The Department OF Statistics (DOS), was established in 1949 under the statistical law no. 24 of 1950 and its amendments, until 2012 where a new provisional law replaced it.

  3. MISSION STATEMENT To produce and disseminate timely and high-quality statistical data that meet the user’s various and changing needs with a view to contributing to the comprehensive development process in Jordan .

  4. ORGANIZATION DOS consists of twelve directorates and fifty-three divisions. At the top of hierarchy is the Director General who reports to the Minister of Planning.

  5. STAGES OF STATISTICAL PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTAION • Frame updating • Publicity campaign • Sample design • Questionnaire design • Field operations • Data processing • Results & tabulation • Data analysis & dissemination

  6. DATA COLLECTION DOS considers the following elements in its practices: • Accuracy and Quality Control • Implementation of Global Recommendations • Confidentiality • Objectivity • Evaluation • Friendly relationship with respondents

CLASSIFICATIONS & DEFINITIONS IMPLEMENTED • INTERNATIONAL STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (FOR ALL ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES) • CENTRAL PRODUCT CLASSIFICATION • BROAD ECONOMIC CATEGORIES (BEC) • HARMONIZED SYSTEM (HS) • STANDARD INTERNATIONAL TRADE CLASSIFICATION (SITC) • CLASSIFICATION OF THE FUNCTION OF THE GOVERNMENT (COFOG)

  12. DATA DISSEMINATION Sources of the data published by DOS: • Internal Sources (censuses, surveys, and Ad hoc surveys carried out by DOS) • External Sources (data provided by other data producers in public & private sectors) such as MOH, MOE, CBJ and factories…etc

  13. DATA DISSEMINATION DISSEMINATION POLICY: • Data should be relevant • Data released to all and at the same time • Monitoring of user requirements for: • Timeliness • Accessibility • Data quality & consistency • Confidentiality • Latest methods of dissemination

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH DATA USERS • To maintain transparency: • DOS meets with data users before and after implementation of any statistical programme (e.g., questionnaire design). • DOS also meets with data users prior to dissemination of data. • We take initiative to build and sustain relationships with our users – data users make valuable suggestions.

  15. BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH DATA USERS • The process of interaction includes a direct dialogue through meetings, seminars & workshops with: • Government officials • Academics & researchers • Business executives • Mass media staff ( Training Courses ) • International organizations

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH DATA USERS • DOS designed a user satisfaction questionnaire for regular feedback. • Questionnaire is included with all DOS data products and gathers information on: • User profile • Data needs • Usability and interpretability of data • Content of data products • Delivery formats

  17. DOS plans for a council of advisors to; • Review DOS statistical programmes. • Consider interactions with data users. • Consider statistics produced by other organizations. • Recommend changes to DOS programmes.

DATA DISSEMINATION Problems experienced by data users: • Lack of technical knowledge of statistical processes, and methodology. • Data produced doesn’t meet anticipated needs. • Data not available in time frame requested by users. • Sometimes data are difficult to be interpreted. • Data inaccessible. • Skepticism in accuracy and methodologies implemented.

  21. CONCLUSION Jordanian Department of Statistics has been working for over 62 years to collect data about all aspects of life, and is committed to providing relevant data to meet user needs.
