  1. Spectrum / EL Update 2011 RUSA Membership survey analysis

  2. Background Spectrum Intern and RUSA EL Emily Kornak & Emily Hamstra were asked to analyze the free form comments from RUSA members from the 2011 Membership Survey. Coordinating with Alicia Ahlvers on RUSA Membership Committee to incorporate Membership feedback and requests

  3. Challenges and Opportunities

  4. Categories encompass… budget (cuts impacting services, staffing, resources, materials, travel) technology (incl. e-books, keeping up with trends, learning new hardware and software, virtual events) staffing (increased job responsibilities, fewer staff, increased expectations and demands; dealing with change roles of libraries and librarians; dealing with administration/internal politics; morale/job satisfaction) relevance & the future of the profession (including accreditation, decreasing demand for reference service, disappearance of libraries, difficulty recruiting, meeting user needs, providing innovative services/solutions) public perception professional development (demonstrating leadership, career advancement, publishing, continued education/conferences, presentations)

  5. Challenges & Opportunities: Highlights • #1 challenge financial: budget cuts, staffing cuts, collection development, physical space constraints together noted by 85% of respondents. • Budget cuts alone noted by 45% of respondents • #2 challenge: keeping up with technology. 36% • Mobile apps, e-readers, new devices, hosting and attending virtual events • #3 challenge: relevance, future of the profession, and public perception. 21% • Ensuring libraries continue to meet patron needs, market services, and advocate to both public and administrations (org. and gov.)

  6. What Can RUSA Offer Members?

  7. What can RUSA offer members?: Highlights • Education (digital collections, assessment, reference, reader’s advisory, etc.) • Webinars and other forms of online education • Publications • “Keep going with RSUQ [sic]. The research there really helps.” • Conferences • virtual meetings and discussions • Networking & Social • “Keep giving me opportunities to meet my peers from throughout the country.”

  8. Satisfaction with RUSA

  9. Satisfaction: Highlights Good news: the most respondents (28%) said they were satisfied with RUSA! Committee feedback mixed pro and con – involvement vs. lack of efficiency Structure/Staff/Finances: Midwinter – eliminate. Fees for conferences & membership too high Mission/Goals/Programming – request for reference standards and more public librarians & programming for PLs. Communications: RUSA quarterly well-received, improvements to website requested.

  10. Recommendations • Update survey, this time focus in on areas of need (budget/financial, technology, relevance & perception) to drill down for specific program topic requests • Reword the question about programs and services RUSA offers or could offer. • Offer more webinars and online learning opportunities • Consider ways to include those with budget constraints into Midwinter activities (virtual, with no charge) • Offer topics especially relevant for public librarians
