  3. Round Table „Barrier-free City“ Chair: Permanent Secretary for Building and Housing Members: Representatives of a wide range of sectors in the economy, including tourism, hotels and restaurants, industry, commerce and transport • Agenda in 2014 – Tourism for All in Berlin

  4. Objectives: • Bundling city- and borough-wide activities on advancing Berlin as a barrier-free city in the spirit of Design for All • Positioning Berlin as a barrier-free city with high urban quality of life (nationally and internationally) • Creating joint interfaces between administrative departments / business and tourism associations / existing initiatives • Developing lighthouse projects

  5. Barrier-free tourism service chain • Arrival and departure • Arriving and finding one’s bearings • Accommodation • Food and drink • Sightseeing and shopping • Entertainment and culture • Leisure and sport • Service and assistance

EUROCITIES • Network of major European cities • Bring together the local governments of more than 140 large cities in over 30 European countries • Platform to share knowledge, exchange experiences and analyze common problems through a wide range of forums, working groups, projects and activities

  9. Associations: • European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT) • European Disability Forum (EDF) • National Charitable Foundation 'Barrier free city' (Russian Federation) • Design for All Foundation

  10. Goal: • Exchange of urban actions to implement the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities • Exchange of best practice to improve accessibility on urban level

  11. Goal: • Network of stakeholders to promote developments in the field of the "Barrier-free city", both conceptional and practical • to implement European strategies on urban level • Transfer of knowledge

  12. Topics of the meetings • Mobility and public transport • Public space and buildings • Standardization • Accessibility and heritage buildings • Tourism for All

  13. Kick-off meeting on 10-12 March 2010, Berlin • Presentation of concepts from member cities

  14. Agenda for 2014 Permanent working focus: • Exchange of municipal actions to implement the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities • Exchange of experience with solutions of design for all in urban areas • European and national standards on accessibility

  15. Challenges for cities in Europe • Accessibility has to be integrated from the outset of the planning of environments, products and services • Implementation of common standards • Implementation of common graphical symbols • Local support groups to implement Design for All in the planning process • Binding agreements to apply manuals and guidelines

  16. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS: • The EU should help disseminate city experiences on the design of information in public spaces and public transport facilities, with requirements for the prevention of risks. This particularly affects the needs of people: • with walking or mobility disabilities • with visual impairments • with hearing impairments • with cognitive disabilities • the elderly and children
