  1. Kepler’s Laws A word on vocab The laws Third law in motion

  2. A word of Vocab • Ellipse • locus of points on a plane where the sum of the distances from any point on the curve to two fixed points is constant • Focus (foci) • Counterpoints of an ellipse • Semi-major axis • Average of the distance from any point on the ellipse to the foci

  3. Kepler’s First Law • Planets orbits are elliptical with the sun at one foci

  4. Kepler’s Second Law • A line from the sun sweeps over equal area in equal time intervals. • Telling us that planets mover faster as they get closer to the sun. • Area a=Area b = Area c

  5. Kepler’s Third Law • The square of a planet’s Period of revolution (p) is equal to the cube of the planet’s average distance to the sun (semi major axis) (a) • Or p2 = a3 • Semi major axis is measured in astronomical units (AU) • The earth is 1 AU from the sun

  6. Planet Data see also pg 645

  7. 3rd Law put to use • Earth: • Period of revolution (P) = 1 year • Semi major axis (a) = 1 AU • p2 = a3 ? • 1=1 • Mars: • Period of revolution (P) = 1.881 years • Semi major axis (a) = 1.524 Au • p2 = a3 ? • 3.54 = 3.54
