  1. Session 15 Beyond the Office: Vineyard Computing Flickr photos – How Do We Actually Work?

  2. Work: macro to micro focus

  3. BEYOND THE OFFICE Vineyard Computing

  4. Vineyard Computing

  5. Research Questions • What data should we gather and how often? • What level of computational interpretation should we apply to the data? • How should we present the data to users?

  6. Findings: user interface level • Proactive computing (return of the socio-technical gap): Need to delegate btwn automatic and human-initiated decisions about data appropriately • UI matched to “work paradigm” – tangible UI (tagged tools) given diverse work roles in the field

  7. Findings: network configuration • Suggestions for sensor network configurations, system optimization driven by work practice. • Battery conservation (don’t need instant, live data) • In-network data processing • Data mules

  8. How do we Really work?

  9. Work Styles / Rituals “I have tried many times to use a desk but my desk always becomes a storage space. No matter how great my desk is I always end up working on my bed. I have since given up the hope of doing work at a desk and fully surrendered to working out of my bed. I work better in a comfortable environment.” - Sophie Photo: Victor “I always try to eliminate the amount of clutter on my desk. I experience clutter as a type of visual noise, and it makes it hard for me to concentrate on whatever I'm studying or working on.”- Soren

  10. Work Styles Intention vs. Reality

  11. The Big Screen Phenomenon

  12. Vs. Enduring Paper Use “Don’t bother with perfection. Go make another. Paper is cheap. Time is not.” ~ MobiouSoul

  13. Collaboration, Visual Creation Work

  14. Memory Work (Spatial) Hot, Warm, Cold Documents

  15. Memory Work (Spatial) Post-it Notes
