  1. One School One Garden Initiative Program Overview With the world’s fisheries and available arable land declining precipitously, many scientists have begun researching more efficient, productive ways to grow food. One such emerging technology, called aquaponics, combines hydroponic agriculture and aquaculture to create a closed-loop food system. The One School One Garden (OSOG) program uses Web-based aquaponic gardens to promote environmental education and awareness and to improve food security in the developing world. Through the OSOG initiative, Kijani Grows partners with schools K-12 in the United States and connects them with organizations in developing countries including schools, orphanages and community centers. By purchasing a Kijani Grows OSOG kit, American schools receive a Smart Aquaponics Garden and 10-module curriculum to provide students with a unique hands-on learning experience. Part of the purchase price will then be used to send a similar Smart Aquaponics Garden to the school’s partner organization. We work with both groups to schedule weekly information sharing about issues faced or key lessons they’ve learned, be it from their aquaponics garden or their broader community. Additionally, data from both gardens is published on the Kijani Grows site in real-time, enabling remote monitoring and control.
