Engage (5 minutes) • Where do you think these landscapes are? • Why do you think the landscape is from _______? • What do you notice about the landscape? • What are some of the characteristics of the landscapes in the paintings? • Does this look similar to the landscape we see here in New Brunswick? • What is your opinion of the the pictures you have seen?

  4. Explore (10 minutes) • Observe the items on the floor and separate them into groups of items with similar qualities. • Separate the rectangle you see on the floor into regions using yarn. • Why did you choose to separate the regions that way? • Explain your rationale. • What are some of the defining features of your home? New Brunswick? Canada?

  5. Explain (5 minutes) • Region: a part of a country having definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries. • Topography: Precise detailed study of the surface features of a region. • Distinguishing features of the 6 different regions in Canada. • 6 Physical Regions are: • Appalachia: a land mass in eastern North America, that contains the appalachia mountains. • Shield: a vast area of land with exposed rock • Lowlands: land that is lower than the land around it • Plain: a large stretch of level/flat or gently rolling land • Cordillera (core-dill-yare-a): a system of parallel mountain ranges • Arctic: an extremely cold, dry and treeless region in the northernmost parts of Earth

  7. Explain (10 minutes) • What should I do with my Post-It note? • 1. Take a look at the pictures around the room of the different landscapes. • 2. Choose one landscape that you think you know how to classify. • 3. Write the name of the region on the Post-It. • 4. Stick your Post-It onto the picture that you think it corresponds to.

Elaborate (15 minutes) / Evaluate • Create a Post Card: • Please draw a landscape on one side of your post card (choose one of the six regions). • On the other side of your post card, write a defining factor about the region that you chose. • Please include your name and pass in at the end of class.
