Apostrophe Purpose • The apostrophe has two purposes: • To indicate that one or more letters was dropped in a contraction: • It is = it’s • Does not = doesn’t • Of the clock = o’clock • To indicate possession • Singular with ‘s • The girl’s toys • Plural with s’ • My brothers’ jobs • Exception – Women’s roles • The apostrophe is not used when your are talking about something plural that’s not a possessive. • 1930s • Possessive would be something like – 1930’s lifestyles
