  1. Abu Ghraib Objective: to analyse a political article

  2. Starter – Discuss and make notes • What arguments are there for treating prisoners humanely? • Is there an argument for different prisoners deserving different kinds of treatment? • What circumstances might lead people to think it’s acceptable to humiliate prisoners?

  3. You have 10 minutes to answer the following questions • Using wikipedia or similar, look up ‘Abu Ghraib’ and in your own words explain what happened there in no more than 3-4 lines. • Read the article that I e-mailed you from this weekend’s news.

  4. What is your opinion of Sonntag’s view that the torture at Abu Ghraib could be linked to accessible internet pornography, digital photography and violent videogames?

  5. Pages 42-45 ‘Regarding the torture of others’ The text is undoubtedly academic in tone. Identify features that contribute to this tone. You might want to consider: • Choices of lexis, semantics and syntax • Rhetorical devices

  6. Read pages 46-51

  7. Summary In terms of discourse structure, there are five sections within this article. Produce a summary of 1-3 sentences for the first three sections, picking out three main points for each. Aiming for an A? You may wish to add a further 1-3 sentences to paraphrase additional important points from each section.

  8. How far do you agree with Sonntag? Do her arguments influence your thinking in terms of the above question about treating different types of prisoners in different ways?

  9. Re-casting Use your summarised sections to construct a list of possible exam re-cast activities over a range of different purpose, audience and genres. Tip: consult your style model handbook for ideas
