  2. Servers • A server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs, in the same or other computer. The physical computer that runs a server program is also sometimes referred to as server. • Server-oriented operating systems tend to have certain features in common that make them more suitable for the server environment, such as • an optional or absent GUI, • ability to reconfigure both hardware and software to some extent without restart, • advanced backup facilities to permit online backups of critical data at regular and frequent intervals, • transparent data transfer between different or devices, • flexible and advanced networking capabilities, • automation capabilities like daemons in UNIX and services in Windows, and • tight system security, with advanced user, resource, data, and memory protection. • Windows has over half a dozen different varieties for doing exactly what you want and for the price you want to pay. • A negative is that windows requires client access licenses.

  3. Window NT Server • Windows NT is a Microsoft Windows personal computer operating system designed for users and businesses needing advanced capability. NT's technology is the base for the Microsoft successor operating system, Windows 2000. Windows NT (which may originally have stood for "New Technology," although Microsoft doesn't say) is actually two products: Microsoft NT Workstation and Microsoft NT Server. The Workstation is designed for users, especially business users, who need faster performance and a system a little more fail-safe than Windows 95 and Windows 98. The Server is designed for business machines that need to provide services for network-attached computers. The Server is required, together with an Internet server such as Microsoft's Internet Information Server, for a Windows system that plans to serve Web pages. • The NT Server is probably the second most installed network server operating system after Novell's NetWare operating system. Microsoft claims that its NT servers are beginning to replace both NetWare and the various Unix-based systems such as those of Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard. NT Server 5.0. essentially became what was renamed Windows 2000.

  4. Window 2000 Server • Windows 2000 is a preemptive, interruptible, graphical and business-oriented operating system designed to work with either uniprocessor or symmetric multi-processor computers. It is part of the Microsoft Windows NT line of operating systems and was released on 17 February 2000. It was succeeded by Windows XP in October 2001 and Windows Server 2003 in April 2003. • Four editions of Windows 2000 were released: Professional, Server, Advanced Server, and Data center Server. Additionally, Microsoft sold Windows 2000 Advanced Server Limited Edition and Windows 2000 Data center Server Limited Edition, which were released in 2001 and run on 64-bit Intel Itanium microprocessors. While each edition of Windows 2000 was targeted to a different market, they share a core set of features, including many system utilities such as the Microsoft Management Console and standard system administration applications. Support for people with disabilities has been improved over Windows NT 4.0 with a number of new technologies, and Microsoft increased support for different languages and locale information. All versions of the operating system support the Windows NT file system, NTFS 3.0, the Encrypting File System, as well as basic and dynamic disk storage. The Windows 2000 Server family has additional features, including the ability to provide Active Directory services, Distributed File System and fault-redundant storage volumes. Windows 2000 can be installed through either a manual or unattended installation. Unattended installations rely on the use of answer files to fill in installation information, and can be performed through a bootable CD using Microsoft Systems Management Server, by the System Preparation Tool.

  5. Window 2003 Server • Windows Server 2003, also referred to as Win2K3 or .NET Server is a server operating system produced by Microsoft. Introduced on 24 April 2003 as the successor to Windows 2000 Server, it is considered by Microsoft to be the cornerstone of its Windows Server System line of business server products. An updated version, Windows Server 2003 R2 was released to manufacturing on the 6th of December, 2005. Its successor, Windows Server 2008, was released on 4 February 2008. • According to Microsoft, Windows Server 2003 is more scalable and delivers better performance than its predecessor, Windows 2000.

  6. Types of Servers • Server Platforms-A term often used synonymously with operating system, a platform is the underlying hardware or software for a system and is thus the engine that drives the server. • Application Servers-Sometimes referred to as a type of middleware, application servers occupy a large chunk of computing territory between database servers and the end user, and they often connect the two. • Audio/Video Servers-Audio/Video servers bring multimedia capabilities to Web sites by enabling them to broadcast streaming multimedia content. • Chat Servers-Chat servers enable a large number of users to exchange information in an environment similar to Internet newsgroups that offer real-time discussion capabilities. • Fax Servers-A fax server is an ideal solution for organizations looking to reduce incoming and outgoing telephone resources but that need to fax actual documents. • FTP Servers-One of the oldest of the Internet services, File Transfer Protocol makes it possible to move one or more files securely between computers while providing file security and organization as well as transfer control.

  7. Protocol • Network Interface-Like the other network protocols, the Microsoft Windows protocols can be based on a variety of network interface types. Interestingly, though, it often does this by having its datagrams placed inside the datagram's from another network protocol suite such as IPX or IP. This techniques is referred to variously as piggybacking or tunneling depending on the situation. • NetBEUI-The lowest level software in the Microsoft Windows protocol suite is NetBEUI. It fills the same role as IP and IPX, but is not "routable." That is, there is no provision for sending NetBEUI datagrams trough routers to create an internet work of NetBEUI-based networks. NetBEUI is really just a thin layer to hide the details of the network interface layer from NetBIOS. It is sometimes called NBF, the NetBIOS Frame format. • NetBIOS -NetBIOS is the name of the middle layer in the Microsoft Windows protocol suite. Typically, current systems using NetBIOS piggyback the datagrams from this layer on top of IPX (via a software product called "NWLink NetBIOS") or IP. The software for layering NetBIOS over IP is called by different names. The user interface seems to refer to it as the "WINS Client," technical folks tend to refer to it as "NBT" (for "NetBIOS over TCP/IP"), and the Windows NT documentation refers to it as NetBT. All of these names refer to the use of RFC1001 and RFC1002 which leads yet others to refer to this practice as RFCNB. • SMB -SMB, the Server Message Block protocol is used by the Microsoft Windows as a transport layer protocol. Like NetBIOS, SMB can be layered over either NetBIOS or IPX to promote maximum marketability. The best reference for SMB is found in the SAMBA documentation. At the Ball State Computer Science Department we use SAMBA to supply SMB services on our Sun Solaris (Unix) timesharing machine. This allows our Microsoft Windows PCs to avail themselves of the services of the Sun for file-sharing and print-sharing in a very simple way without buying any software for the many PCs.

  8. History • On 24 April 2003 Microsoft launched Windows Server 2003, a notable update to Windows 2000 Server encompassing many new security features, a new "Manage Your Server" wizard that simplifies configuring a machine for specific roles, and improved performance. • In December 2005, Microsoft released Windows Server 2003 R2, which is actually Windows Server 2003 with SP1 (Service Pack 1) plus an add-on package. Among the new features are a number of management features for branch offices, file serving, printing and company-wide identity integration. • Windows Home Server (codenamed Q, Quattro) is a server product based on Windows Server 2003, designed for consumer use. The system was announced on 7 January 2007 by Bill Gates. • Microsoft released Windows 2000, known during its development cycle as Windows NT 5.0, in February 2000. • Windows NT is a family of operating systems produced by Microsoft, the first version of which was released in July 1993.
