  42. The Preterit (The past tense) What is the preterit? The preterit is the past tense – things we have done in the past (yesterday, last week, last year, etc.) How do we conjugate verbs in the preterit tense? You use special verb endings (see the new few slides) that indicate past tense. You must conjugate the verb depending on the subject (yo, tú, él/ella/Ud., nosotros, ellos/ellas/Uds. Do we have to do stem-changers in the past? No!! You do not do any stem-changers in the preterit tense. You just have to worry about what ending to stick on the end of the verb. There are endings for –ar verbs, ending for –er/-ir verbs, and a special “yo” ending for –gar/-car/-zar verbs.

  45. Verbs (ending in –gar/-car/-zar) For verbs ending in –gar, -car, or –zar, only the YO form is different than normal gar  gué -amos car  qué zar cé -aste -ó -aron
